DEFINITION
The Firefighter/Paramedic will suppress and control fires in structures and other locations using specialized knowledge and tools, and conduct rescue efforts for individuals involved in accidents. They will assess injuries, administer emergency medical care, extricate trapped individuals, and will also transport injured or sick persons to medical facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responds to fire alarms and other related calls for emergency assistance including automobile and industrial incidents.
- Assesses and quickly analyzes fires and other emergency situations, communicating findings to superiors as needed for further instruction.
- Extinguishes fires in buildings in collaboration with crew members.
- Through constant contact with fire dispatchers, advises when additional firefighters or supplies are needed and provides detailed information on status of operation.
- Searches for, rescues, and administers emergency first aid to victims of fire or other catastrophic events.
- Connects hoses to hydrants and directs water to fire.
- Creates necessary ventilation using a variety of tools.
- Takes feasible steps to protect property from damage due to fire, water, or hazardous chemicals.
- Patrols and oversees burned areas after a fire to identify and extinguish hotspots that could reignite.
- Collaborates with police when responding to situations such as accidents, disasters, and arson investigations that require input and expertise from both agencies.
- Observes, records, and reports to the physician the patient’s condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment. Performs first-aid and emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures such as stomach suction, airway management, and heart monitoring during ambulance ride.
- Immobilizes patient for placement on stretcher and ambulance transport using a backboard or other spinal immobilization device.
- Operates equipment such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), external defibrillators, or bag valve mask resuscitators in advanced life support environments. Administers drugs either orally or by injection or performs intravenous procedures under a physician’s direction.
- Decontaminates ambulance interior after treatment of a patient with an infectious disease and reports case to proper authorities.
- Coordinates work with other emergency medical team members or police or other fire department staff.
- Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Drives and operates vehicles and equipment used in fighting fires and patient transport.
OTHER DUTIES
- Actively participates in ongoing training, seminars, conventions, and conferences to maintain knowledge of current firefighting practices.
- Periodically inspects, drains, and tests fire hydrants.
- Inspects buildings to ensure compliance with fire prevention ordinances; checks for sufficiency and functionality of smoke detectors and fire suppression equipment when needed.
- Cleans and maintains assigned equipment and station areas.
- Provides fire prevention information and education to the public.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Thorough understanding of relevant equipment, tools, policies, procedures, and strategies used in firefighting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills as needed to effectively interact with the public.
Ability to:
- Remain calm and exercise good judgment during hazardous fire-suppression activities.
- Listen, understand, and respond quickly to directions.
- Work well with others, particularly in highly stressful situations.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma/ GED required; Associate’s degree in Forestry, Fire Science, or related field highly desired.
- Successful passage of physical exam and fitness test
- Certification: EMT-Paramedic and
- Completion of fire-suppression work and techniques training.
- Additional on-the-job training provided.
Physical Demands:
- Job is inherently dangerous and presents substantial risk to life and limb.
- Applicants must be able to be fitted for, wear, and operate all protective equipment
- Must be able to complete the required fitness training
Environmental Elements:
- Expected to work in conditions, which will require him or her be exposed to extreme temperatures.
- Will be exposed to noise, hazards, as well as atmospheric conditions in which one or more of the following affects the respiratory system or skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
Other Demands:
Full-Time Fire Territory Staff work a rotating 24/48-hour schedule.
