Full-Time Legal Assistant

About us: Barg Singer Hoesly PC is a growing boutique law firm specializing in commercial real estate transactions and commercial litigation. Our clients include individuals and companies, and range from developers to local and national investors, and from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.

We are seeking a full-time legal assistant to join our downtown Portland office team. Job Summary:

As a Legal Assistant at Barg Singer Hoesly, you will provide executive support in a one-on-one working relationship with our attorneys and other professional staff, and will interact with clients, opposing counsel, vendors, and courts on a daily basis. This work will predominantly focus on a wide variety of litigation matters with occasional work on transactional matters, and will include significant responsibilities with organizing and coordinating operations at the office.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Compensation starts at $60,000 - $75,000, depending on experience.
  • Benefits include employer contribution to health care plan and TriMet pass or parking pass; employer contribution to 401(k) starting in the second year of employment; and two weeks of vacation per year (prorated for any partial calendar year, with vacation time increasing to three weeks per year starting with the third year of employment).

As a Legal Assistant you will be responsible for:

  • Formatting, proofreading, and finalizing detailed correspondence, pleadings, and other legal documents.
  • Making filings in state and federal trial and appellate courts, serving parties and counsel with correspondence, pleadings, and other legal documents in litigated matters, and maintaining case calendars (including calculating and calendaring case deadlines).
  • Opening, organizing, and maintaining client and case files (primarily electronic), and communicating directly with clients, other attorneys, and court staff.
  • Supporting closings and other aspects of our transactional matters.
  • Handling other clerical duties, including answering phones and providing light technical support help.
  • A variety of administrative responsibilities with our firm.
  • Committing to ongoing professional learning, keeping current with changes in court rules and filing procedures so that we can offer great, timely service to our clients.

You are:

  • An excellent communicator with strong and respectful verbal and written communication skills.
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented.
  • A “grammar geek” with a sharp eye for editing and proof-reading.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe, with overall strong computer skills. Familiarity with eDiscovery platforms is preferred as well.
  • Resourceful and flexible enough in your thinking to solve problems as they arise, accept feedback, know when to ask questions, and enjoy working closely with a small team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or an Associate’s degree with a paralegal certificate.
  • At least 2-3 years prior experience as a legal assistant or practice assistant in a law firm, preferably with a focus on litigation support.

Hours:

  • 40 hours per week, on-site in our downtown Portland office (with the possibility of hybrid/partially-remote work after 3 months)
