The Grade 1 Homeroom Teacher is responsible for guiding students in their academic, social, and emotional development during a critical transition from early childhood to primary school. The teacher delivers core subjects—English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies—while fostering a positive classroom environment that supports curiosity, independence, and lifelong learning.
Key Responsibilities:Teaching & Learning
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons in core Grade 1 subjects.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies (storytelling, hands-on activities, games, and technology) to make learning interactive and age-appropriate.
- Introduce and reinforce early literacy skills (phonics, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing).
- Teach foundational mathematics concepts such as numbers, operations, patterns, and measurement.
- Foster inquiry-based learning in science and social studies topics.
- Support the development of students’ communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
Classroom Management
- Create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect and positive behavior.
- Establish routines that help students transition smoothly between activities.
- Provide individualized attention to students with varying learning needs and abilities.
- Encourage self-discipline, empathy, and cooperative learning.
Student Assessment
- Design age-appropriate assessments (quizzes, projects, portfolios, and informal evaluations).
- Monitor and document students’ academic progress, participation, and social-emotional development.
- Provide regular, constructive feedback to students and parents.
- Collaborate with support staff to address students’ specific learning challenges.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with co-teachers, teaching assistants, and subject specialists (e.g., Art, PE, Music).
- Maintain open and consistent communication with parents/guardians regarding student performance and well-being.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences, staff meetings, and professional development workshops.
- Collaborate with other Grade 1 teachers to ensure curriculum consistency and share best practices.
Enrichment & School Life
- Organize and supervise field trips, class projects, and special events to extend learning beyond the classroom.
- Promote students’ participation in school assemblies, performances, and community activities.
- Support the development of students’ social skills, values, and a sense of responsibility.
