1. Job Purpose
To oversee and control all chemical processes in the Hot-Dip Galvanizing plant, ensuring the correct preparation of steel surfaces, maintaining bath chemistry, ensuring high-quality zinc coating in accordance with international standards (ASTM A123 / BS EN ISO 1461), and supporting continuous improvement in production efficiency and product quality.
2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Chemical Process Control
- Monitor, test, and adjust chemical concentrations in all pre-treatment baths (degreasing, pickling, rinsing, fluxing).
- Prepare and replenish chemical solutions as per required concentration levels.
- Maintain zinc bath parameters such as:
- Zinc purity
- Bath temperature
- Dross levels
- Aluminium and iron content
B. Quality Control & Inspection
- Inspect steel surfaces before immersion to ensure proper cleaning and preparation.
- Inspect galvanized products after zinc coating for:
- Coating thickness
- Surface finish
- Adherence
- Absence of defects (runs, bare spots, ash inclusions).
- Conduct daily coating thickness tests using magnetic gauges.
- Ensure production complies with ISO 1461 / ASTM A123 requirements.
C. Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Ensure all chemical handling practices meet HSE requirements.
- Maintain proper storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Ensure ventilation, PPE usage, bund walls, and emergency procedures are followed.
- Conduct regular safety audits of chemical areas.
D. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain daily chemical log sheets for:
- Pickling bath concentration
- Flux density (Baumé)
- Acid/alkali consumption
- Zinc bath chemical analysis
- Prepare weekly and monthly reports for management.
- Update SDS (Safety Data Sheets) and chemical risk assessments.
E. Plant & Process Optimization
- Suggest and implement improvements to reduce chemical consumption and improve product quality.
- Troubleshoot galvanizing defects (e.g., black spots, bare patches, excessive dross).
- Coordinate with maintenance team to ensure tank heaters, burners, pumps, and agitators function properly.
F. Training & Support
- Train operators on chemical handling, titration, and pre-treatment procedures.
- Guide production staff in identifying surface defects and quality issues before galvanizing.
3. Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Metallurgy, or related field.
- 3–7 years experience in Hot-Dip Galvanizing industry is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Steel surface preparation
- Zinc bath chemistry
- Acid management and recovery
- Passivation chemicals
- QA/QC procedures for galvanizing
- Familiar with ISO 1461, ASTM A123, ASTM A153.
4. Skills & CompetenciesTechnical Skills
- Chemical testing (titrations, Baumé, strip tests).
- Understanding of metallurgical reactions.
- Process troubleshooting.
- Zinc bath maintenance.
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Safety-focused mindset.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to train and supervise staff.
5. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Reduction in galvanizing defects.
- Chemical consumption vs. production output.
- Compliance with coating thickness standards.
- Zero safety incidents in chemical areas.
