DEFINITION: Under the direction of the school leadership, plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students across general education and library media settings. This role combines high-quality classroom instruction with the management of library services, placing a special emphasis on early childhood development and the cultivation of a vibrant school community culture. The specialist fosters a love for discovery and creativity while instructing and supervising students in various school-related settings, including virtual environments.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Instructional Excellence & Creativity

  • Classroom Instruction: Meets and instructs assigned classes at designated locations and times, ensuring a safe and orderly learning environment both in-person and virtually.
  • Creative Program Implementation: Plans and implements instructional programs and library services that adhere to system-wide goals while prioritizing creative expression and the unique needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Early Childhood Focus: Adapts lesson plans and library resources specifically to support Early Childhood Education, ensuring foundational literacy and inquiry skills are developed in an age-appropriate, engaging manner.
  • Lesson Planning: Prepares and documents appropriate lesson plans based upon adopted curricula and library science principles to teach instructional objectives.
  • Holistic Development: Creates an instructional environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Student & Community Culture

  • Culture Building: Acts as a champion for the school community culture, using the library media center as a hub for collaborative projects, community storytelling, and cultural celebrations.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicates standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents through meetings and regular updates.
  • Record Keeping: Maintains complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records while monitoring academic progress.
  • Collaboration: Collaborates with school administrators, teachers, paraeducators, parents, and community members in the education of students.
  • Professional Participation: Attends staff meetings and serves on various committees.

Library & Resource Management

  • Creative Resource Oversight: Oversees the appropriate use and care of textbooks, library collections, and instructional materials, ensuring a diverse range of resources that inspire student imagination.
  • Technology Integration: Utilizes technology competency to manage database, internet, and spreadsheet applications related to library science and student data.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
  • Education, training, and experience as required by the Maryland Pathway to Initial Licensure for Library Media Specialists.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated experience or coursework in Early Childhood Education and community-building initiatives.

Licenses and Certificates

  • Possession of a Maryland Educator Professional Certificate with a Library Media Specialist endorsement.
  • OR Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Educator License appropriate to the area of assignment and Library Media Specialist Licensure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Pedagogical Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of pedagogy, library science, and curriculum development.Knowledge of working with early childhood students with varying abilities.
  • Instructional Skill: Skill in instructing students, preparing lesson plans, and implementing effective instructional techniques. Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality about students.Willingness to participate in in-service training.Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
  • Communication & Data: Outstanding oral and written communication skills; knowledge of and skill in data analysis and the use of office applications. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively communicate in English using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and spelling.
  • Confidentiality: Ability to properly maintain confidential information. Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality about students.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS The work is generally performed in a school environment and may require the ability to move around the school, classroom, and library media center.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Requires attendance at after-school and evening meetings and events.

FLSA: Exempt

RETIREMENT: Eligible for the Maryland State Retirement System.

Pay: $61,000.00 - $79,000.00 per year
