General Laborer

Overview
The Rural Iowa Waste Management Association (RIWMA) is seeking a motivated and dependable General Laborer to join our dynamic landfill team. This dual role position supports all aspects of landfill operations, including site maintenance, equipment operation, and customer interaction. The employee will support daily landfill operations by maintaining site cleanliness (collecting windblown litter), operate heavy equipment (compactor, dozer, excavator), and perform general labor duties to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant landfill operations.

Duties

Maintenance & Housekeeping

• Collect and manage windblown litter across the site
• Assist with leachate system maintenance and inspections
• Maintain fences, gates, and signage
• Perform basic groundskeeping (mowing, trimming, weed control)
• Clean and maintain drainage ditches and stormwater controls

Heavy Equipment Operation

• Operate landfill equipment including: Compactor, Dozer, excavator, skid steer, and haul truck
• Spread, compact, and cover waste in accordance with operating plans
• Maintain safe working face conditions
• Conduct daily equipment inspections (fluids, tracks/tires, safety systems)
• Report on mechanical issues promptly

Schedule

• Full-time (40 hours/week) Monday-Friday 7:30-3:30
• Occasional overtime or weekend work as needed

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to operate or learn to operate heavy equipment safely
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and perform physical labor

Preferred

• Experience operating equipment
• Basic mechanical skills (equipment maintenance)
• Class A CDL (or ability to obtain)
• OSHA or heavy equipment certifications

Pre-Employment Requirements

• Drug screening required
• Background check may be conducted

Pay: $21.00 - $22.00 per hour
