Position Overview

The General Maintenance Worker will perform general maintenance, upkeep, and repairs for assigned equipment and properties, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, heating and cooling, and other building maintenance and groundskeeping duties. This position requires strong technical and problem-solving skills to complete a diverse range of duties, ensuring a safe and well-maintained environment for the people we support and their support staff.

  • Reports to: Associate Director.
  • Takes direction from: Associate Director, or designee.
  • This position is not covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement and is a non union position.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspects and identifies equipment or machines in need of repair.
  • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and building systems to determine the necessary repair or to identify when a specialist is required.
  • Plans repair work using building’s blueprints or equipment manual as needed.
  • Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.
  • Performs routine maintenance on building systems.
  • Cleans and assists with upkeep of the homes
  • Complete work orders for general repairs.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the property to identify and correct any potential issues or safety hazards, and participate in the annual budgeting process to establish cost planning
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests as needed, which may require being on-call after regular hours
  • Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repair work performed
  • Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance.
  • Must report to their supervisor any issues/concerns that may fall outside of their normal job duties in a timely manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

Social Skill Requirements

  • Ability to positively interact with people we support and coworkers, and outside contractors.
  • Ability to understand the unique abilities of people and support them in identifying their strengths and interests.
  • Ability to effectively send and receive verbal communication using the English language.

Aptitude Requirements

  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Knowledge of general carpentry and repair.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be able to read English and write it legibly.
  • Able to perform basic math functions.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must have the ability to analyze, reason, and make decisions.
  • Must be able to learn and retain new skills.

Environmental Factors

  • Most work is performed in a variety of settings.
  • Frequent exposure to outside elements.
  • Frequent driving
  • Possible exposure to chemicals and/or compounds throughout work shift.
  • May be asked to drive personal vehicle when no agency vehicle is available.
