Job Title: General & Motor Insurance Underwriter

Job Summary

The General & Motor Insurance Underwriter is responsible for evaluating risks, determining policy terms, coverage limits, and premiums for motor and general insurance products. The role ensures profitable underwriting while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements and delivering excellent service to clients and brokers.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

  • Evaluate proposals for motor and general insurance (motor, property, liability, marine, etc.)
  • Analyze risk factors such as vehicle type, usage, claims history, and insured profiles
  • Determine appropriate coverage, deductibles, exclusions, and premium rates
  • Approve, modify, or decline risks in line with underwriting authority

Policy Administration

  • Issue policies, endorsements, renewals, and cancellations accurately and timely
  • Ensure documentation is complete and compliant with company and insurer guidelines
  • Maintain accurate underwriting and policy records

Client Coordination

  • Liaise with agents, and clients for quotations and risk clarifications
  • Provide technical underwriting support and product guidance
  • Negotiate terms and conditions within approved authority levels

Claims & Portfolio Management

  • Review claims trends and loss ratios to support underwriting decisions
  • Assist claims team with technical underwriting input when required
  • Monitor portfolio performance and recommend corrective actions

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal underwriting policies
  • Prepare MIS, underwriting reports, and risk analysis for management
  • Support audits and regulatory inspections

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of motor and general insurance underwriting principles
  • Risk analysis and decision-making skills
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical ability
  • Good negotiation and communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office and underwriting systems

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • 2-3 years of underwriting experience in motor and general insurance
  • Professional insurance certifications (preferred)

  • Underwriting Manager / Head of Underwriting
