Fast-growing municipal law firm in Royal Oak that practices exclusively in municipal law is seeking a full-time General Municipal Attorney to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who wants a broad municipal practice handling prosecutions, land use, labor/ employment, and litigation on behalf of local government clients.
Location: Royal Oak, Michigan (office-based with potential hybrid flexibility)
Experience: 5+ years preferred (municipal, government, or civil litigation background)
Bar: Licensed to practice in Michigan (required)
Salary: Commensurate with experience

We are a fast-growing boutique firm dedicated solely to serving municipalities — Townships, Cities, Counties, and other municipal authorities. Our attorneys advise elected officials and municipal staff, appear at public meetings and hearings, draft ordinances and contracts, and litigate in state and federal courts and administrative forums.
Responsibilities
- Advise and represent clients on land use and planning matters: zoning, site plan/Planning commission, variances, special land uses, conditional uses, and permitting processes.
- Prosecute municipal ordinance violations and represent municipalities in administrative hearings and municipal court.
- Handle labor and employment matters, including collective bargaining support, unfair labor practice defense, employee discipline, grievance/arbitration, and general employment counseling.
- Manage civil litigation from intake through trial: drafting pleadings, discovery, motions, case strategy, and courtroom advocacy.
- Draft and review municipal ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, policies, and legal opinions.
- Counsel clients on Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act, ethics, conflicts of interest, and other municipal governance issues.
- Handle tax tribunal matters and negotiations.
- Provide clear, practical legal advice to elected officials, boards, and municipal staff; attend meetings and public hearings as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- Active Michigan law license and good standing with the State Bar of Michigan.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in municipal law, government representation, civil litigation, or closely related practice areas.
- Excellent legal writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines and work directly with elected officials and municipal staff.
- Ability to attend Board meetings after 5:00 PM.
- Ability to work independently
Preferred
- Prior experience prosecuting municipal ordinances and handling land use/zoning matters.
- Experience with collective bargaining, labor relations, and employment litigation.
- Familiarity with the Michigan Open Meetings Act and FOIA practice.
Job Type: Full-time
Projected Total Compensation: $80,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
