Golf Course Greenskeeper I

Department: Golf Course Operations
Working Hours: 30-55. Weekends Required.
Pay Rate: $15.00/hr
Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent or the Assistant Golf Course Superintendents; perform routine manual labor involved in golf course maintenance. The Greenskeeper I participates in a diverse range of activities involved in golf course maintenance including daily course preparation, mowing, renovations, equipment operation, water management, construction projects, etc. The Greenskeeper I will be specifically trained to operate specialized equipment and/or to perform specific tasks relative to the maintenance of the golf course grounds.
Greenskeeper I has 2 or less years experience.
Principal Duties:
  • Operate all basic utility vehicles.
  • Efficiently and effectively rake and maintain bunkers, including rake placement.
  • Safely and effectively operate backpack blowers.
  • Safely and effectively operate line trimmers and head edgers.
  • Safely and effectively operate green mowers, tee mowers, and collar mowers, including complete mowing procedure.
  • Assist in all areas of the maintenance of the grounds including assistance with the horticulture department including basic maintenance, planting, and bed preparations.
  • Safely and effectively operate rotary pushmowers and flymowers, including complete rotary procedure.
  • Must participate and complete all Basic Safety Training Programs.
  • Performs all fall leaf removal and winter snow removal.
  • Assist in reconstruction projects including grading and preparing soil, seeding, sodding, etc.
  • Participates in golf course projects including renovations, aerifications, drainage, tree removal, and construction.
  • Perform daily cleaning tasks necessary to keep the maintenance facility clean, organized and safe.
  • Inspect all machines and report any deficiencies to the Equipment Technician.
  • Wear uniform properly.
  • Required to wear personal protective clothing and/or use protective equipment to comply with established safety operating standards.
  • Follow guidelines in the golf course maintenance operations manual for each specific task.
  • Perform other functions and routine golf course maintenance activities as directed by the Director of Agronomy & Grounds, Head Equipment. Manager, Golf Course Superintendent, and Assistant Superintendent.
  • Perform any other tasks requested by the management, the Club, or the Owner.
Physical, Mental and Visual Skills:
  • Good organizational skills and good verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to follow oral and written directions and work in cooperation with fellow employees.
  • Safety consciousness and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to visually inspect golf course conditioning and club house grounds.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work; may be required to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Perform such activities as bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping for up to five hours without sitting.
  • Dedication to personal improvement and course advancement.
Required Work Habits:
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Work habits include regular attendance, team work, initiative, dependability, positive attitude, and promptness.
  • Must be able to work holidays and weekends as these are the busiest times for the golf course.
Educational, Development and Work-Related Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent education preferred. Ability to understand and follow directions and operate golf course machinery.
  • Successful completion of the Equipment Operator I training program within 6 months of employment.
Working Conditions: Works primarily outdoors on golf course and clubhouse grounds.

May experience the following:
  • Carbon monoxide fumes from various equipment.
  • Various insects, compounds, and plants (example – poison ivy).
  • Electrical outlets and wiring.
  • Grease and oil on equipment and shop floor.
  • Hot hydraulic fluids.
  • Potentially damaging noise levels.
  • Dirt, dust, and grass clippings.
  • Flying golf balls.
  • Load/transport 50 pound fertilizer and seed bags.
  • Move benches short distances that may weigh 25-50 pounds.
  • Potential exposure to pesticides, herbicides, dangerous chemicals and solvents and fertilizers if proper safety procedures are not followed.
