Job Summary

Under faculty supervision, each GTA will take on full responsibility for teaching two sections of Psychology 1101: one in fall semester and one in spring semester. Second year students (1st year GTA IIs) teach face-to-face sections; third year students may have the opportunity to teach an online section depending on program/department needs.


Duties include:

  • 90% ¿ Developing syllabus, using Course Den and Concourse and related technologies, creatively presenting material to students, designing assessments, evaluating and grading student assignments, tutoring students in scholarly writing skills, facilitating discussions, entering grades, tracking and reporting on student progress, meeting with students as needed outside of class.
  • 10% ¿ Participating in mentorship meetings and with other GTAs to share experiences and promote peer-based learning.

Required Qualifications

To be considered for a graduate assistantship at the University of West Georgia (UWG), students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be fully admitted to a graduate degree program at UWG. Please note: Students admitted provisionally are not eligible for assistantship positions.
  • Hold a Bachelor¿s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be enrolled full-time in a UWG graduate program during the assistantship period.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all previous and current graduate coursework and remain in good academic standing.
  • Meet eligibility requirements for employment in the United States.
  • Must have completed more than 18 credit hours of graduate coursework in psychology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrolled in the PhD Program in Psychology

Proposed Salary

  • A monthly stipend of $1,660.00 per month
  • A tuition waiver, reducing your semester rate to $25 plus mandatory fees as long as you are employed in your assistantship.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Teaching assistants must be enrolled as doctoral students in the program or an approved related doctoral field.
  • They must possess a master¿s degree or equivalent graduate preparation appropriate to the teaching assignment.
  • Continued eligibility for a teaching assistantship requires satisfactory academic standing and progress toward the doctoral degree.
  • Graduate teaching assistant duties are performed primarily in classroom, office, and computer-based settings.
  • The position does not involve unusual physical demands, hazardous conditions, or requirements such as heavy lifting.
  • Typical physical activities may include sitting or standing for periods of time, walking between classrooms or offices, using a computer, reading and grading student work, and communicating with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with documented needs.
