This position is hybrid (60% office 40% WFH)
Position summary:
The Grant Writer is responsible for securing and stewarding grant funding that supports the lifesaving programs of the Humane Society of Utah (HSU). Working closely with the VP of Philanthropy, this position researches funding opportunities, writes and submits grant proposals, and manages reporting and compliance for HSU's grant portfolio. The Grant Writer collaborates across departments to understand program needs and translate HSU's mission, impact, and outcomes into compelling funding requests. This role is ideal for a strategic, detail-oriented writer who wants their work to directly expand HSU's capacity to care for animals in our community.

Other duties: Performs other duties as assigned in support of HSU's mission and operational needs.
Qualifications
Required
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of grant writing or related nonprofit fundraising experience, including a track record of securing grant funding.
Licenses/certifications: Not applicable.
Technical skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat DC, and Gmail; experience using donor or grants databases (e.g., Foundation Directory) is required.
Physical requirements: Primarily sedentary office work; occasional lifting of materials up to 15 lbs.
Schedule requirements: Standard business hours with occasional flexibility for grant deadlines. Some nights and weekends are required.

Work environment
Primarily office-based, with occasional time on the shelter campus; may involve exposure to animal-related noise and odors during campus visits.
Animal contact
Minimal to occasional; primarily limited to interactions during campus visits or program tours.
Emotional demands: Occasional exposure to stories or data involving animal suffering, neglect, or euthanasia as part of grant reporting and program updates.
Schedule variability: Generally consistent business hours schedule; occasional flexibility needed around grant submission deadlines. Some evening and weekend availability will be needed for fundraising events, donor meetings, or community engagement activities, with scheduling planned thoughtfully and flexibly whenever possible. No rotating shifts or routine on-call expectations.
