Graphic Designer
Full-Time, Exempt
Position Overview:
The Graphic Designer is responsible for producing print, digital, and interactive materials and assets. This includes execution and development of the George Washington’s Mount Vernon, The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, and Washington Library brands.
The graphic designer plays a crucial role in helping the organization achieve its goals by maintaining brand standards and effectively conveying the mission of preserving George Washington’s life and legacy. The graphic designer works thoughtfully in a fast-paced environment to ensure that assets are delivered on time, on budget, and in keeping with brand standards.
Essential Duties:
- Under the Creative Director’s direction, the graphic designer will design and deliver digital and print assets. Projects include, but are not limited to
- Advertising and campaigns
- Invitation packages for private and public events.
- Social media, email, and website graphics
- Photo production for the Mount Vernon magazine in coordination with the Creative Director and Editors.
- Photo Shoot Art Direction
- Photo Editing and archiving
- Event and Portrait photography
- Fundraising materials
- Educational materials
- 5K/10M Patriot Run race creative
- Signage, product, and event materials
- Create wireframes and mockups for digital interactives and website design changes
- Assist with motion graphic needs for video production
- Assist in maintaining and advancing Mount Vernon’s visual asset and design systems: Marq, Mediagraph, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Work closely with other departments and the Creative Director to anticipate needs and ensure production timelines are met.
- Develop branding assets for internal clients, logo design, and typeface research.
- Maintain and advance Mount Vernon’s brand and visual identity style guide, ensuring that it is accessible to other departments and outside partners.
- Provide input and work with third-party agencies to ensure Mount Vernon’s brand guidelines are followed across external work.
- In partnership with the Creative Director, help guide the visual direction for photoshoots.
- Supervise Interns as needed. Guiding their work and progress.
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of graphic design experience
- A.A.S/ B.A./ B.S. degree in Graphic Design or a related field; or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Suite and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of color theory, print and digital color palettes, and Pantone color matching.
- Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of system development methodologies, digital asset management, project management, and product management is a plus. Familiarity with Asana, Mediagraph, and Marq, is a plus.
- Ability to translate business objectives into visual assets.
- A strong understanding of brand values and how to translate them into clear, engaging, and on-brand designs.
- Solid understanding of design principles and best practices across digital and print.
- Knowledge of typography, layout, hierarchy, and branding.
- Aptitude for continuous learning to stay on top of new design trends and technologies.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interface with many stakeholders.
- Ability to creatively think about and approach problems and assigned projects.
- Overall knowledge of creative workflow, as well as print, packaging, retail, and digital products.
Special Requirements:
Ability to work non-traditional hours on occasion, including some weekends, early mornings, and evenings
Work Environment:
This position operates primarily in a professional office setting. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The work environment is generally quiet, with occasional interruptions.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, talk, hear, and use hands to type or handle objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Visual acuity to read and interpret documents and computer screens is required.
