SUMMARY

The Outpatient Peer Support Specialist empowers clients and their families to identify and achieve personal goals in recovery. This role focuses on building hope, fostering self-advocacy, and promoting personal growth through shared lived experience. The Peer Support Specialist models effective coping techniques, encourages the development of problem-solving and communication skills, and helps clients access resources that support long-term wellness.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with and compassion for individuals with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders, particularly those involved in the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of resources, methods, and techniques for all stages of change in substance use treatment.
  • Familiarity with Motivational Interviewing and Trauma-Informed Care techniques.
  • Strong understanding of community resources and ability to facilitate referrals.
  • Professional presentation and competent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum of 1 year substance-free.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish rapport by demonstrating and maintaining clear, consistent, and culturally appropriate professional boundaries with clients.
  • Demonstrate alignment with the philosophy of Motivational Interviewing and effective collaboration within a team setting.

  • Exhibit knowledge of substance use, mental health, recovery, wellness, community resources, support services, and referral systems.
  • Apply principles of peer/family support effectively.
  • Maintain communication with the treatment team regarding the needs of clients and their families.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings to discuss treatment progress and emerging issues, articulating the client’s perspective.
  • Partner with clients to identify goals and analyze progress toward those goals.
  • Develop and execute discharge and aftercare plans that incorporate the client’s voice and ensure continued support through relevant resources.
  • Assist clients with crisis/emergency planning and interventions, providing compassionate and culturally sensitive support.
  • Support clients in accessing and scheduling appointments.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and agency health and safety reporting requirements.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • General knowledge of 12-Step Programs preferred.
  • Peer Support Specialist Certification.
