Groundman - Electrical Distribution

Position Summary: A skilled laborer’s position responsible for assisting Linemen to install and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and transmission equipment by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities include the following.

Other duties may be assigned dictated by operational necessity.

Gathers tools and supplies to be used at work site.
Assists Linemen as a groundman and apprentice.
Measures, cuts, and bends wire and conduit as directed by Linemen.
Assists in lifting, positioning, and fastening objects such as wiring, conduit, and motors. Performs minor repairs such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches. Maintains tools and equipment and keeps supplies and parts in order.
Disassembles defective electrical equipment, replaces defective or worn parts, and reassembles equipment.
Cleans work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
Performs tree trimming duties as necessary.
Must be able to comply with scheduling requirements, including working on-call.
Operate equipment on bucket trucks and line crew truck.
Dig holes for setting utility poles.
Performs other routine duties.

Must have working knowledge of the equipment necessary to repair power distribution lines, including lift truck, power line tools, and safety equipment.
Must have knowledge of proper safety procedures associated with line crew work, especially working with live lines.
Must have thorough working knowledge of the equipment necessary to trim trees. 
Must have knowledge of proper tree trimming procedures and safety procedures associated with tree trimming.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the line crews, including peers, superiors, subordinates.
Must be able to communicate effectively with the public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to work in units of measure related to electrical and power equipment.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in non-standardized situations.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one-year related experience and/or training.
Enrollment in an approved Electrical Distribution Technology program highly desirable but not required.

Certificates and Licenses:
Must hold a valid Class B commercial driver’s license

Supervisory Responsibilities: No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to work in high, precarious places; outdoor weather conditions and risk of electrical shock.

The employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

This is a mandatory drug testing position. Subject to random drug and alcohol testing consistent with DOT I have read and understand the contents of this Job Description.

Pay: $19.08 - $30.51 per hour
