Grounds Maintenance Worker I

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work
Performs semiskilled work mowing, seeding, planting, pruning, trimming, spraying and fertilizing grass, trees, shrubs, bushes, hedges and flowers, performing a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance activities, operating, maintaining and repairing equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader.

Essential Functions
Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of the City property, highways, and right-of-ways including mowing, weed removal, trimming, spraying herbicides and insecticides, clearing sight distance problems, etc.
Operates various vehicles and equipment including dump truck with leaf loader, commercial mowers, tractors, bush hogs, backhoe, bobcat, bucket truck, boom tractor, garbage truck, snow plow, etc.
Cuts and trims trees throughout parks and roadways.
Maintains parks by picking up debris, foreign objects removal, etc.; fertilizes and seeds parks as needed.
Performs equipment maintenance on mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, etc.
Handles maintenance work on water fountains, water lines, irrigation, toilets and various buildings throughout the City.
Pulls weeds from flower beds; mulches flower beds.
Clears walkways and trails of leaves, debris, etc.; performs ice and snow removal from sidewalks.
Sets up, works, tears down and cleans up during City sponsored special events including trash removal, trail closures, temporary fence construction, temporary floor and lighting, crowd control, road closures, etc.
Sets up work zones, construction zones, and safety zones, on highways, right-of-ways, parks, alley ways, and City streets including flagging traffic and lane closures.
Serves as temporary crew leader during leaf collection season; oversees temporary workers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventative maintenance of equipment used in landscaping grounds maintenance; general knowledge in preparing reports and other types of correspondence; thorough knowledge in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to set up a safe work zone using signs, cones and flaggers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking and speaking or hearing, frequent standing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and climbing or balancing and occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; worker is regularly working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).

Special Requirements
Obtain a valid Class A commercial driver's license in the State of Tennessee within one year of hire.

Driver’s License valid in the State of Tennessee upon hire.
