SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance this position serves as the district’s irrigation mechanic, specializing in the design, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of commercial irrigation systems across multiple school campuses. Responsibilities include water management, smart controller programming, and compliance with local, state, and district water-use policies. This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of grounds facilities and for the repair of equipment requiring metal work; playground equipment; irrigation systems; outdoor surfaces including hardtop, resilient, natural and artificial turf; drainage systems including drywells, catch basins, and storm drains; outside structures, including fence lines, gates, flagpoles; sports and playfield activity preparation; program and shop equipment. This position is subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandated drug and alcohol testing as provided by District Policy #5202.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform work to build, install, modify and repair facilities in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Prepare requisitions and specifications for supplies and materials. Assist in the preparation of contract specifications. Assist in technical inspections to assure compliance with specifications.
  • Assure satisfactory completion of all assigned work orders in conformance with all applicable codes and district policy and procedures.
  • Interpret drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  • Maintain assigned tools and equipment.
  • Work cooperatively with outside contractors and assist in verify completion of contracted work to specifications.
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating needs for maintenance work and inclusion into a planned maintenance program.
  • Repair and modify irrigation systems as needed. Design, install, repair, and maintain all district irrigation systems, including manual and automatic systems, controllers, valves, pumps, and associated electrical components.
  • Perform system diagnostics and troubleshooting on low-voltage irrigation wiring and hydraulic components.
  • Program, calibrate, and optimize smart irrigation controllers to improve efficiency and reduce water consumption.
  • Monitor and adjust irrigation schedules seasonally based on plant needs, soil conditions, and weather data.
  • Conduct pressure tests, flow measurements, and zone mapping for accurate system documentation.
  • Coordinate irrigation work with Grounds, Maintenance, and Capital Projects staff to ensure compatibility with landscape design, athletic field use, and facility schedules.
  • Assist the district in maintaining accurate as-built drawings and system records, including zone maps and component inventories.
  • Respond promptly to irrigation emergencies such as leaks or system failures that could impact playfields or public safety.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of district-wide water conservation initiatives.
  • Provide input when requested concerning the most appropriate manner of repair, replacement, modification, or new installation work considering cost, timelines, and equipment of all applicable county, state and federal codes.
  • Work cooperatively with supervisor when requested in providing realistic labor and material cost estimates.
  • Provide requested input on causes of failures discovered during preventive maintenance inspections and offer suggestions of correction when requested. Assist in the analysis of preventive maintenance inspection findings and causes of failures. Assist in determining and recommending modifications to work practices or preventive maintenance frequencies.
  • Provide assistance to the supervisor when requested in the preparation of reports and documentation of modifications to as-built drawings and facility records.
  • Adhere to district and departmental policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise. Determine and request training to maintain skills relevant to the changing technology.
  • Respond at any time needed to emergencies which endanger life and district property and assist in restoration work and prevention of further damage.
  • Assist other crafts in the performance of their duties.
  • Model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Foster and maintain strong productive relationships with district employees, parents, students, and other community members. Work with a variety of people in a positive manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • And
  • Five (5) years of recent successful experience in private enterprise or government agency related to the responsibilities listed in the job description.

Or

  • Successful completion of a trade school course in one or more of the assigned areas of responsibility and three (3) years of recent successful experience with related responsibilities.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial or institutional irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair—preferably in a public agency, municipality, or school district setting.
  • Demonstrated two (2) years of experience as a lead occasionally directing the work of others.
  • Experience using irrigation management software and central control systems (e.g., Rain Bird IQ, Hunter Hydrawise, Toro Sentinel, or equivalent).

Pay: $36.35 - $38.55 per hour
