Summary/Objective

The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining an aesthetically pleasing and functional outdoor space. Their duties include planting flowers and shrubbery, mowing lawns, maintaining equipment and taking directions from the Lead Groundskeeper to determine their vision for the space.
This position will be available starting on 10/01/2025

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow daily work schedule as assigned by the Lead Groundskeeper or management; maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Complete and create work orders using the department’s computerized maintenance management system (Asset Essentials) on a mobile device.
  • Request needed equipment, tools, supplies and materials; recommend and assist in ordering sod, plants, hedges and equipment.
  • Perform grounds maintenance work involved in planting, cultivating, trimming, pruning, fertilizing and irrigating trees, shrubs, hedges and lawns; water lawns and plants by hand as needed, mowing, edging, raking, chain sawing, weeding and blowing.
  • Operate grounds keeping power equipment as necessary.
  • Picking up of trash and other debris from County grounds.
  • Inspect and assure maintenance and safe operating conditions of grounds keeping power equipment, and tools; perform routine maintenance of grounds equipment; maintain grounds areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:


  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in grounds keeping.
  • Methods used in planting, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing and caring for plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns.
  • Methods and materials used in controlling pests and insects.
  • Principles of training and providing work direction.
  • Operation and use of assigned grounds equipment.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
ABILITY TO:
  • Perform grounds keeping duties in the care and maintenance of County grounds.
  • Receive and provide work direction to others.
  • Inspect and verify proper and safe work practices and procedures.
  • Operate hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.
  • Operate heavy power equipment used in grounds keeping.
  • Schedule and assign grounds keeping activities and personnel.
  • Lift heavy objects utilizing proper techniques.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and product labels.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Properly utilize and wear personal protective equipment as required.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Raise and lower national and state flag as directed.
  • Responsible for setup, maintenance and take down of Christmas displays.
  • Assist with setup, tear down and clean-up of various events.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair and install irrigation systems.
  • Shovel, chip and apply ice melt to remove and prevent snow/ice accumulation when needed.
  • Report maintenance repair needs to the Lead Groundskeeper or Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Remove graffiti from buildings and property.
  • Regularly attend safety meetings and other department meetings.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Previous grounds keeping experience preferred but not required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must currently possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver License.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing.
  • Requires dexterity of hands and fingers for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching.
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights, up to 75 pounds.
  • Requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, and exposure to dust, fumes and gases.
  • Outdoor environment subject to extreme temperatures.
  • Work may be required on rooftops or ladders at varying heights.
  • Work may be performed in confined or restricted spaces.
  • Will be subjected to loud noises and noisy equipment.
  • Must have good vision and accurate depth perception; able to properly discern between colors.
  • Work with job related chemicals.
Travel
  • The Groundskeeper must be able to drive a pick-up truck and pull equipment trailers.
  • May occasionally be required to attend training classes, seminars or conferences.
