Groundskeeper, Facility Services

EMPLOYMENT TERMS: Full-time position

PRIMARY DUTY: As a part of the Landscape Services team, the Groundskeeper will perform grounds keeping activities for the main campus including the athletic fields, equestrian area, MOERA, the Maryville Community Center/Armory, Ag Learning Center, and the cross-country trail

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Implement grounds keeping functions within main campus lawn and landscape areas

2. Maintain campus lawn areas by mowing, trimming, edging, seeding, tilling, fertilizing, and aerating

3. Maintain campus landscapes by trimming trees and shrubs, plant and maintain display beds, mulch and weed all landscape on campus

4. Maintain natural and synthetic field surfaces in designated area: Routine maintenance, Identify damage and repair turf when needed, Cleaning/sterilizing as needed and all other synthetic field care functions as needed to maintain a safe and playable surface

5. Able to repair and maintain irrigation systems

6. Remove litter, leaves, and weeds

7. Perform Winter Storm Response by assisting with snow removal from walks, stairs, ramps, and other areas as assigned as well as applying ice-melting chemicals

8. Mix, apply, and store appropriate pesticides under appropriate supervision

9. Repair and construct various types of fencing

10. Maintain and clean equipment and work areas as required

11. Clean-up after scheduled weekend and special events

12. Assist with the event tent/temporary flooring setup and take down

13. Assist with bleacher setup and cleanup for events

14. Assist with concrete projects when needed

15. Assist with campus signage and barricades

16. Assist with greenhouse operations

17. Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma

Certification/License: Valid driver’s license

Skills: Strong knowledge of pest management and basic lawn maintenance while having high attention to detail and are required to be creative, driven, and physically fit


WORKING CONDITIONS: This position will work the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a half-hour lunch break Tuesday through Saturday. This position will work outdoors in all types of weather year around and will also be exposed to air conditioning as well as high heat to sub-zero temperatures. This position is considered essential staff. Essential staff provide services that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the University, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect University properties. Should the University close for any reason, essential staff will report to work as usual.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Monitor and provide guidance to student employees

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED: Computer for email, mowers, trucks, utility vehicles, weed-trimmers, tillers, tractors and attachments, sod cutters, aerators, chain saws, hand tools, pesticides, fertilizers, edgers, snowblade truck, skid loader or toolcat along with their attachments, and other gardening and landscape maintenance tools

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Occasional heavy lifting with the ability to lift 50 pounds, walking, standing, bending, reaching, manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard grounds maintenance and cleaning machinery, and normal range of vision and hearing
