These seasonal positions require basic knowledge in the operation of mowers, weed eaters, hand tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance. The Seasonal Groundskeepers must perform manual labor in maintaining the city’s parks & cemeteries while also providing street maintenance support. Must have sufficient strength to perform strenuous physical outside labor for extended periods even during adverse weather conditions. Requires occasional weekend and evening shifts. Must possess a valid driver’s.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Basic knowledge of the maintenance, operation and repair of grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters and blowers. Physical capability to move, place and carry heavy plywood, gravestones, jackhammers and steel burial vaults. Ability to detect major maintenance problems in equipment to prevent unnecessary damage and downtime. Extensive use of hand tools such as shovels, pruning shears, post hole diggers, rakes and shop tools. Refuse and litter control of city grounds and during public events. Foliage and debris removal during various times of the year. Tree and shrub removal, planting, pruning and mulching is necessary to maintain appearance standards of the community. Painting, light construction and landscaping of city-owned property are required to enhance the beautification of city grounds. Occasionally may need to refer citizens’ questions/complaints to supervisors. Attendance at public events such as festivals and other significant events to maintain litter and refuse control. The possible removal or relocation of the deceased during excavation of a burial site. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Ability to use mowers in close quarters without damage to equipment or gravestones. Experience in the operation of lawn equipment, trucks, tractors and/or similar equipment. Knowledge in softball and soccer athletic field maintenance. Ability to effectively speak with fellow employees, supervisors and others. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors and the general public.
