JOB DESCRIPTION: GSE TECHNICIAN / MECHANIC
Job Title: Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Technician / Mechanic
Department: Maintenance / Ground Operations
Reports To: GSE Fleet Manager / Maintenance Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Job Summary
The GSE Technician is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of a diverse fleet of Ground Support Equipment. This role is critical to ensuring that all motorized and non-motorized equipment is safe, reliable, and available to support on-time flight departures. Work will be performed in a hangar environment and on the flight line.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Preventative Maintenance (50%)
- Perform routine inspections (daily, A, B, C checks) per OEM and FAA standards.
- Change oil, filters, hydraulic fluids, and lubricate moving parts.
- Conduct battery service (lead-acid and lithium) and charging system tests.
- Maintain tire pressure and tread depth; perform tire changes and retorquing.
Diagnostic & Repair (40%)
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic failures using scan tools, multimeters, and schematics.
- Repair or replace engines (diesel/gas), transmissions, braking systems (air/hydraulic), steering components, and suspension.
- Troubleshoot 12v/24v DC electrical systems (lights, starters, alternators, sensors).
- Repair hydraulic systems (pumps, cylinders, hoses, fittings).
- Perform welding and fabrication repairs on baggage carts and belt loaders.
Operational Support (10%)
- Provide “AOG” (Aircraft on Ground) rapid response support to the flight line.
- Service equipment with fuel, DEF, and water.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the maintenance shop.
- Complete detailed work orders and time tracking via CMMS software.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of verifiable experience as a mechanic (automotive, diesel, or aviation GSE).
- Technical trade school certification (ASE, A&P, or diesel) strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Proficient with diagnostic software (e.g., JPRO, Allison DOC, Cummins Insite).
- Strong understanding of diesel engines (DPF/DEF systems) and 12/24v electrical schematics.
- Ability to read hydraulic diagrams and troubleshoot complex systems.
- Welding (MIG/TIG/Stick) and fabrication skills preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 75 lbs repeatedly; stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for 8-10 hours.
- Comfortable working in extreme weather (heat, cold, rain) and high-noise environments.
- Near visual acuity (correctable) for reading wiring diagrams and fine inspection.
Certifications & Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License (CDL Class B or Air Brake endorsement is a plus).
- ASE Heavy Truck Certification (T2-T8) preferred.
- OSHA 10 or 30-hour General Industry certification preferred.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen (DOT/FAA compliant) and background check.
