POSITION DESCRIPTION
HGL is hiring for a Waste Sampling Specialist (Hazardous Waste Disposal Technician III) that supports nuclear decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) operations by performing environmental and radiological waste sampling, characterization, and data evaluation activities to support a Deactivation, Decommissioning, and Removal project for five buildings at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) project site in Livermore, CA. The duration of project is anticipated to be 5 ½ years.

This role ensures compliance with DOE, NRC, EPA, and state regulatory requirements and supports safe, compliant waste disposition activities. The position requires hands-on field sampling experience in radiological and hazardous waste environments and close coordination with health physics, waste management, and project operations teams.

Responsibilities/Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Perform field sampling of radiological, hazardous, mixed, and non-hazardous waste streams in support of D&D activities
  • Collect soil, concrete, debris, water, sludge, and bulk waste samples using approved procedures and sampling plans
  • Support waste characterization efforts to determine appropriate treatment, storage, transportation, and disposal pathways
  • Maintain strict adherence to chain-of-custody, sample integrity, and QA/QC requirements
  • Conduct sampling activities in compliance with DOE Orders, NRC regulations, RCRA, TSCA, CERCLA, and applicable state and local regulations
  • Follow radiological control procedures and work under Radiological Work Permits (RWPs)
  • Apply ALARA principles during all field activities
  • Participate in safety briefings, hazard analyses, and pre-task planning
  • Document sampling activities accurately in field logs, databases, and electronic systems
  • Review laboratory analytical data for completeness, quality, and regulatory compliance
  • Assist with preparation of sampling reports, waste profiles, and regulatory documentation
  • Support audits, inspections, and regulatory inquiries as needed

Required Skills

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in environmental or radiological sampling
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Health Physics, Nuclear Science, or a related scientific discipline
  • Experience completing chain of custody forms, coordinating sampling efforts, and packaging and shipping samples for laboratory analysis
  • Working knowledge of hazardous and/or radioactive waste characterization requirements
  • OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER) 40-hour certification
  • Ability to work in industrial and radiological environments
  • Ability to lift up to 40lbs and perform field work in varying conditions
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection and other required PPE

The salary for this position ranges from $81,408.00-$122,112.00.
This position's final salary can be impacted by various factors including, but not limited to, contractual requirements, geographic location, job-related education, training, experience, and skills.
