Head Gardener

Job Overview
The Head Gardener is a senior, hands-on leadership role responsible for the full care, design, and long-term development of all seven acres of Maison Albion's gardens and grounds. This position works closely with the Venue's Director to ensure the property is in peak condition for every event — from intimate gatherings to large-scale weddings — while maintaining a year-round maintenance and improvement program.

This is a rare opportunity for a skilled horticulturalist and natural leader to put their full creative and technical expertise to work in one of the region's most celebrated event spaces.

Duties

  • Oversee and personally participate in the daily maintenance of all seven acres, including formal garden beds, lawns, hedgerows, pathways, water features, and wooded areas.
  • Develop and execute a seasonal planting calendar aligned with the venue's event schedule and aesthetic vision.
  • Manage soil health, irrigation systems, drainage, and plant nutrition programs.
  • Ensure all outdoor spaces are event-ready, pristine, and photo-perfect throughout the wedding and event season (April–November).
  • Coordinate winterization, dormant-season maintenance, and spring preparation to maintain year-round property integrity.
  • Supervise landscape maintenance teams to ensure pristine grounds and healthy plantings
  • Utilize hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for planting, pruning, installation, and repairs
  • Develop innovative strategies for gardening, landscaping, farming, and land management that align with environmental standards
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure projects are completed on time while maintaining high quality standards
  • Coordinate grounds preparation schedules with event booking calendars to ensure peak presentation on event days.
  • Manage the annual gardens budget, including procurement of plants, tools, equipment, and supplies.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of professional gardening or horticulture experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in plant identification, seasonal care, and landscape design.
  • Experience managing large-scale grounds (3+ acres) in a professional or estate setting.
  • Proficiency with all standard grounds maintenance equipment (mowers, aerators, irrigation systems, etc.).
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced events environment.
  • Valid driver's license and the physical ability to perform demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Strong background in growing plants, vegetables, or flowers within a horticultural or farming setting
  • Knowledge of gardening techniques, lawn care practices, landscape maintenance procedures, and agricultural principles
  • Familiarity with hand tools such as shovels, pruners, trowels as well as power tools like trimmers or drills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage teams effectively
  • Excellent understanding of landscaping design principles and sustainable land management practices

Ideal candidates will possess hands-on experience in horticulture or agriculture-related fields such as gardening or farming. A passion for cultivating vibrant landscapes and sustainable growth is essential. Certifications in irrigation or landscape management are a plus but not mandatory. This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape beautiful environments while promoting eco-friendly practices. Join us to lead innovative projects that make a lasting impact on our landscapes!
