Head Groundskeeper
Position Overview:
As the Head Groundskeeper for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, you will oversee all daily maintenance, preparation, and long-term care of the playing surface and related field areas at the stadium. This role ensures the field consistently meets professional baseball standards and remains safe, playable, and visually exceptional year-round.
This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for turf management, infield preparation, irrigation systems, drainage, equipment upkeep, and supervising the grounds crew staff. The Head Groundskeeper plays a vital role in delivering a first-class experience for players, coaches, umpires, and fans.
Essential Job Functions:
Field Preparation & Maintenance
- Oversee preparation of the playing field for all baseball games and special events, including setup and breakdown of necessary equipment
- Manage all aspects of turf maintenance, including fertilization, disease control, edging, mound and plate preparation, warning track maintenance, and infield surface care
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure field quality, safety, and playability at all times
- Maintain compliance with professional baseball playing surface standards
- Monitor weather conditions and manage infield tarp operations to protect the field
- Perform post-game field and turf maintenance as required
- Develop and implement seasonal and off-season turf management programs Work with local vendors to establish and manage fertilization, herbicide, and fungicide programs
Irrigation, Drainage & Equipment
- Repair and maintain irrigation systems
- Monitor and manage field drainage systems to prevent flooding and ensure playable conditions
- Operate and maintain all grounds equipment safely and keep it in excellent working condition
- Maintain clean and organized grounds and storage areas
Staff Management & Operations Support
- Hire, schedule, train, and supervise interns, part-time, and game-day grounds staff
- Manage assigned budgets including supplies, equipment, and game-day labor
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with home and visiting managers to coordinate field usage
- Maintain professional relationships with umpires
- Assist with fireworks coordination and fall-out crew
- Support the Operations Department with stadium upkeep, off-season projects, painting, carpentry, and general maintenance
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices in sports turf management Perform additional duties as assigned
Skill Requirements:
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience as a Head Groundskeeper
- Turfgrass degree or certification from a two-year program or higher
- Extensive knowledge of turf management practices, including fertilization, disease control, edging, mound and plate maintenance, warning track maintenance, and infield surface care
- Knowledge of hybrid Bermuda turf management, including overseeding, top dressing, and sod repair
- Valid Driver’s License
- Valid Pesticide License (preferred)
- Demonstrated experience managing seasonal and part-time staff
- Strong organizational and budget management skills
- Positive attitude and team-oriented mindset
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and other environmental factors Commitment to maintaining a safe, professional, and visually exceptional playing surface
