- Strategic Leadership: Developing and implementing a long-term vision, mission, and School Development Plan in collaboration with governing bodies.
- Academic Oversight: Ensuring the delivery of a high-quality curriculum, monitoring teaching standards through classroom observations, and tracking student achievement data.
- Staff Management: Recruiting, inducting, and mentoring teaching and support staff, as well as conducting performance appraisals and facilitating professional development.
- Student Welfare & Discipline: Maintaining a safe learning environment, enforcing behaviour policies, and overseeing pastoral care and safeguarding procedures.
- Financial & Resource Management: Preparing and managing the school's annual budget, authorizing expenditures, and overseeing the maintenance of school facilities and equipment.
- Community Engagement: Acting as the school's main representative to parents, alumni, and local authorities, and fostering strong community relationships.
- Teaching (Optional but Common): In many settings, the Headmaster is a "lead teacher" and may personally teach a minimum number of periods to stay connected with students and staff.
