Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts is hiring a Head of Department, Electrics with a 14-person house staff crew of stagehands at The Filene Center. In this role, the Head Electrician manages a team of Stage Electricians and alongside an experienced well-rounded staff on stage in support of Wolf Trap Foundations summer concert series. Wolf Trap Foundation presents over seventy performances throughout the summer at the beautiful Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park including rock shows, pop, folk, hip-hop, classical, ballet, and Opera. Some events are self-produced while others are multi-truck and bus road shows. Wolf Trap’s season typically spans from May through September.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise staff of five professional stage electricians.
  • Participate in the Loading in, setting up, troubleshooting, running, and loading out of touring shows, attractions, and Foundation events.
  • Email, call, and communicate with touring personnel to advance lighting specific requirements for touring shows while representing Wolf Traps interests and the capabilities of the Filene Center
  • Perform maintenance duties as needed.
    • Ensure that all network switches, pathways, ports, software, and cables are operating effectively and are always able to manage guest networks.
    • Maintain and repair an extensive inventory of conventional and intelligent lighting systems in the Filene Center Inventory.
    • Oversee the maintenance of all electrical systems and lighting systems covered under the jurisdiction of the CBA.
    • Work with National Park Service Maintenance staff to replace or repair house lighting systems.
  • Serve as the Lighting Director for touring shows as the need arises.
  • Advise and collaborate with guest lighting designers for the Wolf Trap Opera Company. May require servicing as a board operator/programmer.
  • Ensure absolute professionalism in the workplace.
  • In coordination with Management and other Department Heads, advise and/or design future capital projects for improvements in the lighting infrastructure. Attend and participate in weekly scheduling/production meetings.
  • Ensure that all staff are working in a safe manner, following all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Distribute show assignments to assistants in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Keep up to date on professional trends and recent technologies.
  • Train Assistants in operating lighting control consoles and networks.
  • Train Assistants in the upkeep and repair of lighting instruments.
  • Provide a safe and inclusive environment for staff and guests.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL DEOMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING:
  • Excellent skills in stage electronics and lighting instruments.
  • The ability to design and generate lighting plots, Lite write documentation, and communicate effectively with outside and guest lighting technicians and designers.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of lighting products and vendors.
  • Full understanding of networking and backend systems to maintain a solid lighting network.
  • The ability to program and operate industry-standard lighting desks with a strong focus on Grand MA2 & 3’s.
  • Troubleshooting skills, Bench work proficiency, and general knowledge of all areas of stagecraft is required.
  • Be able to manage departmental workflows. Show situational awareness and conflict resolution.
  • The ability to work within Wolf Trap’s standard SOP while maintaining flexibility to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • A strong understanding on how to read and interpret Collective Bargaining Agreements.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work on your feet for extended periods of time.
  • Infrequent periods sitting at desk on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50lbs on a regular basis.
  • Requires the ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend and reach with arms.
  • Work in hot and humid conditions outdoors, but not necessarily in direct sunlight.
  • Work at heights greater than 5’ while practicing safe working practices.

This position operates under a collective bargaining agreement between Wolf Trap Foundation and I.A.T.S.E Local 22, guaranteeing a weekly minimum of 40 hours at straight time and 8 hours of overtime with a base pay of $71.87 per hour. You do not need to be a union member to apply. While all are encouraged to apply, non-union applicants must agree to work under the collective bargaining agreement with I.A.T.S.E Local 22. The position entails a two-season/year probationary period.
