The role…

Are you a passionate, forward thinking Theatre Electrician with experience leading a technical team? Are you dedicated to delivering the highest quality in everything you do?

We are currently recruiting for a Head of Electrics at the Adelphi Theatre. In this exciting and varied role, you will: manage the delivery of rehearsals and performances of our resident production, manage the delivery of concerts and events, manage & carry out maintenance and installation of the technical and building infrastructure.

Through the leadership of a diverse and multi-skilled team, you will provide the highest standard of customer experience to our resident production and break new ground in our industry.

What you’ll be doing…

Working closely with the Technical Manager, Head of Stage Engineering and Venue Technicians, you will:

  • Ensure the team deliver the highest technical standards of customer service to the resident and visiting productions for all performances, previews and technical rehearsals.
  • Support the Technical and Building Services Manager and, in conjunction with the Head of Stage Engineering, to deputise in their absence.
  • Support and deputise for the Technical Manager to lead the advance planning of all productions from a technical perspective including creating or reviewing Construction Phase Plans, Method Statements and Risk Assessments prior to productions or events coming into or leaving the Theatre.
  • Working closely with the resident and visiting Production Management, Company Management and its Stage Management to ensure the resident production planned in advance of its load in and out.
  • Manage a team to ensure safe and smooth operation of the resident, visiting productions and venue wide events, ensuring the highest possible production standards are maintained whilst protecting the interest of LW Theatres
  • Ensure that production maintenance and statutory inspections are carried out in line with current legislation.
  • Deliver concerts and events to the highest standard ensuring minimal disturbance to the resident production and ensuring vehicle management is planned to avoid disturbance to our neighbours.
  • Deputise for the Technical Manager to ensure a clear line of communication between incoming productions and the venue.
  • Lead a team to maintain a professional work environment, where performers, technicians and audience members are safe.
  • Problem solving technical issues relating to the production and building services.
  • Deputise for the technical manager, ensuring the continued safe and effective operation of the theatre including achieving satisfactory compliance throughout the building.
  • Carry out first line maintenance and/or review as appropriate the technical infrastructure not limited to: CCTV, Electronic Door Access, Data systems including Wi-Fi, Fire Alarm, Electrical Installations, HVAC and BMS systems.
  • Champion and drive a positive approach to Health & Safety at the Theatre, proactively supporting the practical application of LW Theatres Health and Safety Policy; highlighting any failure by the resident production to comply with it as well as our licensing requirements.
  • Oversee the recruitment of the Electrics team and maintain appropriate staffing levels: working with the rest of the team and the HR department to deliver the required technical services to the resident production.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date HR files for the team, in line with company and statutory requirements.
  • Accurately complete department administration tasks, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Efficiently manage the teams’ hours to meet requirements, being mindful of the Working Time Directive and the maximum working hours permitted in LW Theatres H&S Policy.
  • Manage the team’s annual leave, ensuring entitlement is being booked throughout the year to avoid disruption to department.
  • Create a high-performance culture in the team; setting clear objectives, providing ongoing feedback, identifying relevant training for the team and ensuring that they have or are actively seeking appropriate qualifications.
  • Manage the mandatory training of the electrics department, ensuring all staff training is up to date.
  • Keep backstage and technical areas tidy and well maintained. Ensure that an excellent standard of general housekeeping is always sustained as well as assisting with general maintenance projects and issues.
  • Ensure essential supplies are ordered for the building, maintaining appropriate stock levels, reviewing and signing off Purchase Orders as required.
  • Deliver a maintenance and inspection regime for all technical and building infrastructure including arranging inspections, analysing maintenance and inspection reports and taking appropriate action in each case, including record keeping.
  • Keep up to date with current and emerging technical developments and legislation and make any recommendations for improving the technical equipment or standards of the Theatre.
  • Ensure venue compliance with the Technical Standards for Places of Public Entertainment, as well as Local Authority Rules of Management and other relevant legislation, regulation, guidance, ACOP etc.
  • Ensure there is excellent communication and collaboration between the Electrics department and all other departments in the Theatre.

What we need…

  • Advanced practical knowledge of technical systems, including but not limited to Lighting systems and networking, video systems and networking, temporary electrical infrastructure, and associated control systems.
  • Advanced practical knowledge of building systems and infrastructure, including but not limited to: Electrical systems, communication and IT systems, and Building Management Systems.
  • Experience of managing a team day to day and overseeing the fitting up and get out of concert, TV or touring productions.
  • Commercial awareness; able to manage a budget.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Health & Safety and Licensing requirements associated with theatrical management.
  • Awareness of Construction and Design Management 2015 and Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience of leading, motivating and instructing a technical team.
  • Can adapt to changing circumstances and overcome challenges.
  • Can identify training needs and ensure the technical competence of a team.
  • Experience of successfully delivering projects and working under pressure.
  • Willingness to challenge existing working methods and to introduce new working practices.
  • Pragmatic and proactive approach to resource planning.
  • Happy to work evenings and weekends.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to manage a team during a fit up or get out and during day to day operation.
  • Experience operating and programming a Grand MA, ETC or alike.
  • Experience setting up lighting and video systems.
  • Competent to diagnose and rectify electrical faults.

Advantageous

  • Electrical qualifications.
  • Electrical installation experience.
  • Experience running technical teams.

Salary & Hours:

Salary: £47,699.19 + discretionary bonus

Hours of Work: 40 Hours - over 5 days out of 7
