The Head of English provides strategic and academic leadership for the English Department across the school. The role ensures high standards of teaching and learning in English Language and Literature, drives curriculum development, monitors student achievement, and supports professional growth within the department.
The Head of English promotes a culture of literacy, critical thinking, creativity, and academic excellence while ensuring alignment with school standards and, where applicable, international frameworks such as International Baccalaureate or American curriculum standards.
Key Responsibilities 1. Strategic LeadershipDevelop and articulate a clear vision for English across all grade levels.
Lead the design, implementation, and review of the English curriculum.
Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum standards.
Contribute to whole-school strategic planning and improvement initiatives.
Oversee planning, delivery, and assessment of English Language and Literature.
Ensure curriculum alignment with relevant standards (e.g., IB programmes, American/Common Core, or other adopted frameworks).
Promote inquiry-based learning, critical analysis, and strong writing pedagogy.
Support integration of digital literacy and research skills.
Observe lessons and provide constructive, actionable feedback.
Mentor and coach teachers to improve instructional practices.
Lead professional development within the department.
Promote differentiated instruction to meet diverse learner needs.
Monitor student performance data and examination outcomes.
Oversee internal and external assessments.
Ensure consistent grading and feedback practices across the department.
Implement intervention and enrichment strategies based on data analysis.
Lead recruitment, induction, and appraisal of English teachers.
Chair department meetings and foster collaboration.
Encourage professional growth and continuous improvement.
Manage departmental resources and budget.
Promote whole-school literacy initiatives.
Support cross-curricular writing and communication strategies.
Lead reading promotion activities and enrichment programmes.
Organize literary events, debates, writing competitions, and drama initiatives.
Encourage participation in external competitions and academic opportunities.
Support students with university preparation and advanced course selection (where applicable).
