Head of Operations – Waste Management

Job Purpose:

The Head of Operations – Waste Management will oversee and manage all operational aspects of the waste management business, ensuring efficiency, compliance with environmental regulations, cost-effectiveness, and high-quality service delivery. This role involves strategic planning, team leadership, process optimization, and stakeholder management to drive business growth and sustainability.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operational Management:
  • Oversee daily operations across collection, transportation, recycling, and disposal of waste.
  • Ensure operational efficiency, adherence to schedules, and cost management.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all operational activities.
  1. Strategic Planning:
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop short- and long-term operational strategies.
  • Identify opportunities for business growth, process optimization, and technology adoption.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  1. Compliance & Safety:
  • Ensure compliance with local, regional, and national environmental regulations and safety standards.
  • Implement robust health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies across all operations.
  • Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to minimize operational hazards.
  1. Team Leadership:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop operational teams including supervisors, drivers, and waste handlers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Set clear goals, monitor performance, and conduct regular performance reviews.
  1. Financial Management:
  • Prepare and manage operational budgets and forecasts.
  • Control operational expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Report on operational performance, financial metrics, and efficiency improvements.
  1. Stakeholder Management:
  • Build and maintain relationships with government authorities, regulatory bodies, clients, and vendors.
  • Ensure excellent customer service and timely resolution of client issues.
  • Represent the company in industry forums, conferences, and networking events.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in waste management or environmental services, with at least 5 years in a senior operations leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of waste management processes, recycling, and environmental regulations.
  • Proven experience in operational planning, process optimization, and team leadership.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
