Job Summary
Cafe 42 is seeking an experienced and passionate Head Roaster to lead our coffee roasting operations. The Head Roaster will be responsible for developing roast profiles, managing green bean quality, ensuring consistency, and supporting the overall coffee program. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who is deeply knowledgeable about specialty coffee and committed to delivering exceptional quality in every batch.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of coffee roasting operations
- Develop, test, and refine roast profiles for espresso and filter coffees
- Ensure consistency, quality control, and cupping standards
- Source, evaluate, and manage green coffee in coordination with management/suppliers
- Oversee production scheduling and inventory control
- Maintain roasting equipment and ensure proper calibration and cleanliness
- Conduct cupping sessions and quality evaluations regularly
- Train and support baristas on coffee knowledge, brewing, and flavor profiles
- Document roast data, production records, and quality results
- Ensure compliance with hygiene, safety, and food standards
- Contribute to new product development and seasonal coffee offerings
Qualifications & Requirements
- Proven experience as a Coffee Roaster (specialty coffee preferred)
- Strong understanding of roast development, defect identification, and cupping
- Experience using commercial roasting machines and profiling software
- Knowledge of green bean processing methods and origins
- Strong palate and sensory skills
- Good organizational and production planning skills
- Ability to work independently and lead coffee quality standards
- Willingness to train staff and represent the brand’s coffee vision
- Certification (SCA or equivalent) is an advantage
