Accountability Objective
The Health Information Technology (HIT) Instructor in collaboration with the Director of Health Information Technology provides the vision and leadership required to realize the mission of the Health Information Technology (HIT) Program and Danville Area Community College. Instructional responsibilities require a strong HIT skill set and the ability to teach students effectively in an instructional environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Technology/Management or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) OR as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant professional experience in the field to include current medical coding protocols (e.g., CPT/ ICD-10, PCS)
  • Minimum three (3) years demonstrated teaching experience in Health Information Technology within a post-secondary institution or health care setting.
  • Experience with information technology processes/products such as database management, data analytics and use of Electronic Health Record (HER) platforms, database management, and Microsoft Office Suite

Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Health Information Technology/Management or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution
  • NCRA Credential Oncology Data Specialist (ODS)
  • Greater than three (3) years of relevant professional experience in the field to include current medical coding protocols (e.g., CPT/ ICD-10, PCS)
  • Greater than three (3) years demonstrated teaching experience in Health Information Technology within a post-secondary institution
  • Experience developing and maintaining an effective curriculum to include outcomes assessment and program evaluation.
  • Experience with Health Information Technology national accreditation standards and procedures, i.e., CAHIIM, NCRA
  • Experience with online and hybrid course delivery, including proficiency with a Learning Management System (LMS)

Teaching
Prepare and teach departmental courses to include:
  • Developing learner centered lesson plans
  • Employing teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles
  • Incorporating, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, online and hybrid delivery, and laboratory environments
  • Creating and modeling a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population
  • Preparing, distributing, and utilizing instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate
  • Updating and revising curriculum to maintain currency and compliance with accreditation standards
  • Developing new courses as needed to support the instructional mission
  • Participating in the development and review of course and program/general education outcomes as appropriate
  • Developing, conducting, and documenting assessment of student learning in outcomes at the course and program level.

Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by:
  • Participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in field
  • Maintaining active RHIT or RHIA credential and any additional certifications as required by the program or accreditation standards.
  • Staying current with changes in coding systems, healthcare regulations, and health informatics trends.

Course Management
Provide daily and ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records to include:
  • Maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment
  • Providing for the security of facilities, equipment, and instructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions
  • Maintaining student records (e.g., grades and attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using college-designated technology platforms
  • Complying with all applicable college, state, and federal rules and regulations

Student Support
Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:
  • Participating in program recruitment and information events to support enrollment
  • Providing academic advising
  • Promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success
  • Assisting students with the registration and graduation process
  • Referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate

College Service
Support college-wide endeavors to include:
  • Collaboration with faculty and staff from other divisions/departments to promote communication, coordinate schedules, and support student success j
  • Contributing to programmatic accreditation activities including data collection, annual reporting, and self-study preparation in collaboration with the HIT Director.
  • Serving on department, division, and college committees
  • Attending college professional development sessions, college/division/department meetings, graduation and convocation, as required
  • Demonstrating professional employability skills including adaptability, effective communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
