Responsibilities and Contributions:

  • Conduct health services research using data from the National Health Care Surveys.
  • Write manuscripts and reports for publication by NCHS and professional journals.
  • Work on statistical issues and perform special tabulations on issues of concern in processing electronic health records (EHR) data, including data quality and linkage issues.
  • Respond to internal and external data requests for National Health Care Surveys data.
  • Perform critical operational and statistical tasks, which include developing editing and quality control procedures, conducting confidentiality reviews, performing complex statistical analyses, and ensuring that data file production procedures are technically rigorous and reflect up-to-date methodology.
  • Edit, process, and analyze large health care and survey datasets.
  • Prepare both public use files with associated documentation as well as restricted use files for the NCHS Research Data Center.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • A commitment to delivering high-quality work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication.

Essential Skills, Experience, and Competencies:

  • Master’s degree in the health or social sciences including public health, biostatistics, demography, or some other related field.
  • Applicants must have 1-3 years of experience conducting research and writing programs to analyze data using statistical computing packages including SAS, SUDAAN, and/or SQL.
  • Experience in designing and producing data files and documentation from national health surveys, planning and coordinating confidentiality reviews of these surveys; conducting statistical analyses of complex national surveys or administrative data by applying the principles, theories and methodology of statistics and public health, and preparing reports for NCHS publications as well as peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Experience with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and/or the healthcare domain is a plus.
