Lead a Critical, Compliance-Driven Fleet Operation
A growing California-based transportation company is seeking an experienced Heavy Duty Fleet Manager to lead maintenance operations for a Class 7/8 truck and tank-vehicle fleet supporting regulated petroleum and lubricant transportation.
This role is responsible for fleet availability, preventive maintenance execution, regulatory compliance, vendor performance, and overall operational reliability. The ideal candidate brings strong heavy-duty fleet expertise and leadership experience in a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Reliability & Maintenance Execution
- Own and manage the preventive maintenance program in a CMMS (Fleetio or similar)
- Oversee PM scheduling, defect tracking, work-order controls, and post-repair verification
- Coordinate breakdown response and corrective maintenance to minimize downtime
- Analyze repeat defects and implement corrective actions to improve uptime
- Manage light-duty and assigned vehicle maintenance programs
Regulatory Compliance (California & DOT/FMCSA)
- Oversee cargo tank inspection and testing per 49 CFR Part 180
- Administer CARB Clean Truck Check (CTC) and Cargo Tank Vapor Recovery Program (CTVRP)
- Maintain inspection-ready records for DOT/FMCSA and CHP BIT audits
- Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and audit-ready
Leadership, Vendors & Cost Control
- Provide oversight of mobile mechanics, shop partners, and vendors
- Manage repair approvals, vendor SLAs, parts sourcing, tire programs, and warranty recovery
- Partner with Dispatch and Operations to balance uptime and service commitments
- Track KPIs including PM compliance, availability, road-call rate, and cost trends
Required:
- 5+ years of heavy-duty fleet maintenance experience (Class 7/8 vehicles)
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA and California compliance requirements
- CMMS proficiency (Fleetio or similar)
- Experience maintaining inspection-ready maintenance documentation
Preferred:
- 5–7+ years leading heavy-duty or tanker maintenance operations
- Multi-site oversight experience
- ASE T-Series certifications
- CDL-A with Hazmat/Tanker endorsements
- Experience with cargo tank inspection/testing workflows
- Experience administering CARB programs (CTC/CTVRP)
Work Environment & Travel
- Field and shop inspections required
- Exposure to heavy equipment and regulated materials
- Based in West Sacramento with travel to multiple sites as needed
- Occasional evening and weekend availability may be required
