SALARY INFORMATION

All newly hired employees will start at the beginning rate of pay for the position they are being hired for ($6,396 per month for Heavy Duty Mechanic), but the District does provide past experience credit to provide employees a higher salary.

The District will provide one (1) year of credit for every completed year of experience with the same or closely related job duties working for a public school district. The District will also provide one (1) year of credit for every two (2) completed years of experience with the same of closely related job duties working for a non-school district employer or private/non-public education employer.

If hired, and you have past experience in this position, you will complete our Verification of Experience (VOE) form. The VOE form will be sent to your past employer(s) and once they are completed and returned, the District will review the years of experience and provide service credit as stated above. This will be effective on the most recent pay cycle (not retroactive to the first day of employment).

DEFINITION

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Maintenance, Operations, Transportation, and Facilities (MOTF), District Management, and/or Designee. Performs mandated inspections as required by state laws and regulations to ensure safety, repairs and maintains the up-keep of buses, trucks, vans, automobiles, tractors, mowers, gardening equipment, maintenance equipment and other District equipment on a daily basis. Performs other related work as necessary or required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.

  • Confer with Transportation Management as needed;
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance consisting of safety inspection, lubrication, 3,000 miles and 45-day inspections;
  • Provides a file folder for each bus and vehicle and log all maintenance and repairs performed;
  • Pick up and deliver equipment to District sites and/or vendors;
  • Diagnose and repair engine and high voltage electrical systems;
  • Repairs, overhauls and makes adjustments to District equipment;
  • Replacement of engines, transmission, suspension to include brakes;
  • Performs arc and gas welding in repairing and fabricating of equipment;
  • Performs emergency services on the road to district vehicles;
  • Works professionally with vendors that perform other technical services;
  • Takes initiative to work with limited supervision;
  • Follows all instruction and recommendations from the California Highway Patrol;
  • Oversees emission testing and certification of vehicles and equipment;
  • Oversees the completion of inspections and repairs by outside vendors;
  • Test drives and performs safety inspections on all District vehicles and equipment ensuring that repairs have been completed;
  • Maintains and repairs shop equipment;
  • Disposes of hazardous materials according to established policies;
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-services, training programs as assigned;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Safety methods of using air tools, electrical equipment and mechanical tools in the maintenance and repair of district vehicles and equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy when interacting with others, especially as they relate to students.

Ability to:

  • Perform skilled and safe maintenance and repair work;
  • Diagnose, locate and repair mechanical, electrical, air and suspension problems;
  • Read and interpret manufacturers manuals and recalls;
  • Read and interpret State Vehicle Code Regulation pertaining to vehicles and equipment;
  • Requisition materials, tools, parts needed to make repairs;
  • Maintain accurate inventory of equipment and repair parts;
  • Pass a required physical examination as defined by current local, state and federal laws;
  • Follow up and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Use current District technology and software;
  • Maintain tools, support equipment and working areas, charging systems,fuel storage in safe condition as per fire and safety regulation;
  • Be aware of surrounding work environment and adapt as needed;
  • Work independently, in a team environment or large group;
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment;
  • Establish and maintain effective, respectful, and cooperative working relationships with school staff, colleagues, supervisors and the public;
  • Prioritize and meet deadlines of scheduled work;

  • Communicate effectively with vendors, students, staff, administrators and parents especially as they relate to students;

Experience:

  • Two years of journeyman-level experience in the maintenance of diesel, gasoline, zero-emission vehicles and suspension system and related components - preferred.

License Requirement:

  • Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Class A or Class B Operator’s License; and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • DMV form DL 51.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to random drug testing.
  • Maintains current and valid required licensing and certification.
  • Air and hydraulic brake certification.
  • Certificate of Diesel and Gasoline engines diagnostic procedures.

Education:

  • Completion of a course in diesel, automotive and suspension systems.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary Education – preferred.
  • Pass a rigorous District test related to the field applied.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a shop and a field environment as needed. The employee’s primary responsibility is working with staff during the work day. This position may involve frequent interruption and direct contact with staff and the public; a high volume of responsibilities that may require working without direct and/or constant supervision; and working in a shop and/or field environment where the noise level is usually moderate.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical and mental requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert up to 100 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. For heavier items, assistance should be requested.
  • This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.
  • May be exposed to chemicals and fumes.
