Heavy Equipment Operator / Truck Driver

Compensation: $25.00 - $30.00 hourly
Position Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator / Truck Driver is responsible for safely operating company trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment to support Lakeside’s demolition and concrete cutting operations across Maine. This role ensures the efficient transport of dumpsters, equipment, and materials between job sites while maintaining the highest standards of safety, communication, and professionalism.
The position requires flexibility, self-direction, and the ability to work in a fast-paced field environment with changing job priorities.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Equipment Operation
· Operate a variety of heavy equipment including excavators, skid steers, loaders, mini-excavators, and forklifts to assist in demolition and cutting operations.
· Perform daily pre- and post-operation inspections on all assigned equipment and vehicles.
· Safely load, unload, and secure tools, dumpsters, and materials on trucks and trailers.
· Assist field crews with job site setup, debris removal, and equipment movement as needed.
· Maintain equipment cleanliness and report any maintenance needs immediately to the shop or supervisor.
Dumpster Transportation
· Drive roll-off truck to transport dumpsters to and from job sites across Maine.
· Deliver full dumpsters to designated transfer stations and return empties to job sites as directed.
· Determine the most efficient disposal routes based on material type, location, and disposal cost.
· Work directly with dispatch or the project supervisor to prioritize daily deliveries and pickups.
· Maintain constant communication via hands-free Bluetooth while operating.
Safety
· Follow Lakeside’s safety policies and OSHA/MDOT regulations at all times.
· Conduct daily vehicle and equipment inspections before operating.
· Ensure cargo and dumpsters are properly secured and tarped before transport.
· Report unsafe conditions, mechanical issues, and near-misses immediately.
· Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and on-site safety briefings.
Field Operations
· Support demolition and cutting crews in site preparation, equipment movement, and cleanup.
· Operate trucks and machinery in tight or congested areas with precision and safety awareness.
· Represent Lakeside professionally at all job sites—maintaining strong communication with supervisors, clients, and crew members.
Qualifications
· Valid Class A or B CDL with a clean driving record.
· 3–5 years of combined experience operating heavy equipment and driving commercial trucks.
· Must meet all U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements for safety-sensitive positions, including participation in the company’s DOT-mandated drug and alcohol testing program.
· Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) appropriate for vehicles over 26,000 GVW.
· Familiarity with construction, demolition, or concrete cutting environments.
· Working knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and state safety standards.
· Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing conditions.
· Basic mechanical aptitude for identifying and reporting equipment issues.
Physical Requirements
· Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
· Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds independently.
· Frequent climbing on ladders, scaffolding, and vehicles.
· Manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
· Ability to work in confined spaces and elevated areas.
· Must wear and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, hearing protection, and protective clothing, as required.
Working Conditions
· Early morning start times, as early as 5:00 a.m., may be required to support drivers.
· Overtime may be required with minimal or no advance notice based on operational needs.
· Work performed indoors and outdoors, including exposure to all weather conditions year-round.
· Frequent exposure to noise, dust, vibration, fumes, exhaust, gasoline, diesel, and hazardous materials.
· Regular work around moving vehicles, heavy machinery, and equipment with moving parts.
· May be required to drive a company vehicle statewide to respond to shop or jobsite needs.
