POSITION SUMMARY

Atlantic Power Constructors is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Heavy Equipment & Utility Fleet Mechanic to support the maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and operational readiness of utility line construction equipment, heavy-duty trucks, trailers, bucket trucks, digger derricks, tracked equipment, and off-road construction machinery supporting transmission and distribution operations.

This position is critical to supporting utility line construction and storm restoration operations by ensuring all fleet and utility equipment remains safe, compliant, and operational. The ideal candidate will possess strong experience working on CDL-regulated trucks, hydraulic systems, aerial equipment, tracked equipment, and utility construction machinery in a fast-paced operational environment.

This position is based out of Walterboro, South Carolina and may require overtime, weekend work, after-hours response, and occasional travel based on operational and storm restoration needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment & Fleet Maintenance

· Perform preventative maintenance inspections and scheduled servicing on heavy diesel trucks, trailers, utility construction equipment, bucket trucks, digger derricks, tracked equipment, off-road equipment, and fleet vehicles.

· Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and diesel engine issues.

· Troubleshoot and repair:

o Diesel engines

o Hydraulic and aerial systems

o PTO systems

o Electrical systems

o Air brake systems

o Fuel systems

o Cooling systems

o Drivetrain and transmission systems

o Suspension and chassis components

o Undercarriage and track systems

· Repair and maintain:

o Bucket trucks

o Digger derricks

o Line trucks

o Utility trailers

o Heavy-duty diesel trucks

o Excavators

o Mini excavators

o Skid steers

o Tracked and off-road construction equipment

o Utility construction equipment

· Utilize diagnostic software, testing equipment, OEM service information, and schematics to identify equipment failures and repair needs.

· Perform welding, fabrication, and minor structural repairs as needed.

· Complete emergency repairs in the field or during storm restoration operations when required.

· Assist with maintaining equipment inventory, parts organization, and shop cleanliness.

· Support equipment upfitting, modifications, and installations as needed.

Inspection & Compliance

· Conduct equipment inspections to ensure compliance with company safety standards, DOT requirements, and manufacturer recommendations.

· Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and repair documentation.

· Ensure all equipment is maintained in safe operating condition.

· Support fleet compliance efforts related to inspections, preventative maintenance, and recordkeeping.

· Identify equipment deficiencies and proactively recommend repair or replacement solutions.

· Support fleet readiness initiatives to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability.

Safety & Operational Support

· Follow all company safety procedures, policies, and safe work practices.

· Properly use PPE, tools, and diagnostic equipment.

· Support operational readiness during emergency response and storm restoration events.

· Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop and work environment.

· Collaborate with field operations personnel, fleet management, and leadership to prioritize equipment needs.

· Respond to emergency repair situations and outage restoration support as operationally required.

SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS

· High school diploma or equivalent required.

· Technical school certification or formal training in diesel technology, heavy equipment mechanics, automotive technology, or related field preferred.

· Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, or utility fleet mechanic strongly preferred.

· Extensive experience maintaining and repairing:

o Bucket trucks

o Digger derricks

o Utility line trucks

o Heavy-duty diesel trucks

o Excavators and tracked equipment

o Off-road construction equipment

o Hydraulic and aerial equipment

o CDL-regulated commercial vehicles

· Strong working knowledge of:

o Diesel engine systems

o Hydraulic systems and controls

o Aerial equipment systems

o PTO systems

o Electrical diagnostics and repair

o Pneumatic systems

o Air brake systems

o DOT inspections and fleet compliance

o Heavy equipment maintenance practices

· Experience supporting utility line contractors, electric utility fleets, heavy civil construction, or storm restoration operations strongly preferred.

· Experience with Altec, Terex, Hi-Ranger, CAT, Deere, Kubota, or similar utility/heavy equipment preferred.

· Experience using OEM diagnostic software, electronic troubleshooting equipment, and computerized maintenance systems preferred.

· Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams, technical manuals, diagnostic information, and service documentation.

· Welding and fabrication experience preferred.

· CDL license preferred or ability to obtain.

· ASE, diesel mechanic, hydraulic, or heavy equipment certifications are a plus.

· Must possess strong troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.

· Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, emergency call-outs, and storm restoration assignments as needed.

· Must provide own basic mechanic tools; specialty tools will be provided by the Company.

· Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding work in varying environmental conditions.

· Must be eligible to join IBEW Local Union 776.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position primarily works in a shop and field environment and may be exposed to varying weather conditions, loud noise levels, grease, oils, fuels, moving mechanical parts, and heavy equipment operations. The role requires standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending, lifting, and working in physically demanding environments.
