Job Summary:
The Maintenance Worker I position is responsible for maintaining all roads owned by Cape Girardeau County. This includes easements, patching broken pavement, repairing bridges and guard rails, and highway signage. The Maintenance Worker I position will operate assigned trucks and/or equipment and assists co-workers, foremen, Assist. Highway Administrator and the Highway Department Administrator as directed and in a safe manner.
Duties:
· Operate various forms of construction equipment including but not limited to, dual axel and tandem axel dump trucks, graders, front end loaders, roller compactor, anti-icing units, various mower and sand bucket trucks in a safe manner
· Performs minor adjustments and repairs to equipment; service and maintains equipment (lube/oil change; change tires, light bulbs, fuses, filters, windshield wipers); steam clean equipment. Keeps minor records such as fuel usage
· Operates snow removal equipment requiring a class C driver’s license. Assists in road closures including directing traffic and proper placement of warning and detour signs, removes snow from signs and other traffic safety devices
· Performs general labor by using various hand tools (e.g., chain saw, shovels) in the maintenance & repair of highways (e.g., patches potholes, spreads berm gravel, repairs & paints guardrails, shovels snow, hand spreads salt on sidewalk, steps & pedestrian walkways, seals cracks)
· Perform bridge maintenance perform pothole repair, shoulder repair and general maintenance; and use other construction related equipment
· Will perform grass mowing, tree/limb removal, pruning and culvert and ditch maintenance
· Will provide traffic control with sign and cone for lane and road closures in a safe manner
