Nature of Work
This is responsible highway and road maintenance work involving hauling materials and supplies for various construction and repair projects along roadways for Maury County government. Activities associated with the job include hauling and dumping rock, asphalt, cold chip mix, drain tile, etc. to and from ongoing road construction and repair projects. Incumbents must be capable of safely operating a tandem axle dump truck and some of the other heavy equipment and machinery utilized by the highway department for road repair, mowing and clearing brush. Incumbents may also be required to perform a variety of activities associated with roadway construction including directing traffic and ensuring the safety of the public and co-workers. Some activities require heavy manual labor depending upon workload demands. Job responsibilities require considerable experience working in road construction and operating large dump trucks and heavy equipment, ability to follow instructions and complete job assignments in a timely and proper manner, good organizational and interpersonal skills and sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Job performance is evaluated by the Assistant Highway Superintendent and/or Highway Superintendent through review of the level of support and assistance with highway operations, compliance with established policies and procedures, ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely and proper manner and ability to interact effectively with co-workers and the public.
Illustrative Examples of Work- Completes a safety inspection of assigned trucks and equipment prior to operation.
- Drives to the quarry to obtain a load of rock and deliver it to the work site.
- Utilizes a forklift to load drain tile into the dump truck.
- Assists with cutting down trees and heavy brush to clear right of ways when necessary.
- Mows shoulders and medians and clears brush and trees along county roadways when necessary.
- Operates pruning equipment and chippers to clear roadside right of ways.
- Pours rock over drain tile after installation and spreads rock on county roads.
- Completes daily reports to account for all loads hauled, mileage and location of work assignments.
- Assists with a wide variety of road repair and construction projects using power and hand tools when required to meet seasonal workload demands.
- Puts up and moves signs to warn traffic of mowing activities, road hazards and road construction projects.
- Drives dump trucks to deliver rock, asphalt and cold mix to road construction and paving projects.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to maintain the proper operation of trucks and highway equipment.
- Operates snowplows to apply melting agents and remove snow and ice from county roadways.
- Shovels and rakes hot or cold mix to repair potholes and small patches of roadway.
- Directs traffic around highway maintenance operations such as mowing, paving and road repair activities.
- Performs related duties as required.
Necessary Requirements of Work
Graduation from an accredited high school (or GED program) preferred; considerable experience working in highway maintenance operations and operating heavy equipment; ability to interact tactfully with co-workers and the public; ability to make decisions within established operating procedures; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to perform the following critical knowledge, abilities and skills:
- Considerable knowledge of highway equipment operation and maintenance including side and boom mowers, bush hogs, pruning equipment, chippers and dump trucks.
- Considerable knowledge of traffic regulations pertaining to right of way and related safety procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and minor repair of heavy equipment utilized for highway construction, mowing and maintenance.
- Considerable knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely around heavy equipment utilized in highway construction and maintenance projects.
- Ability to operate specialized and non-specialized highway equipment in a safe manner.
- Ability to operate chain saws, power tools and hand tools in a proper and safe manner.
- Ability to consistently make timely and proper job related decisions after receiving daily assignments.
- Ability to maintain routine time and materials records and reports in an accurate and thorough manner.
- Ability to communicate and interact with the public in a professional and tactful manner.
- Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in all types of weather conditions.
- Skill in the operation of tandem axle dump trucks and some types of heavy equipment utilized in highway construction and maintenance projects and mowing and maintenance of right of ways.

Physical Requirements- This is heavy work requiring considerable static, explosive, dynamic and trunk strength and requiring the exertion of up to 80 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects
