Historic Car Mechanic

Position: Historic Car Technician

EDL Services, located in Troy, Michigan, is expanding and in search of a full-time (40hrs per week) Historic Car Technician that can perform classic and antique vehicle servicing work such as: Carburetor rebuilds, ignition system servicing (points distributors), fuel delivery system servicing (mechanical fuel pumps), electrical repair, chassis maintenance, brake servicing, and diagnostic work for each respective system. Restoration experience is highly preferred, but not required. Adaptation and a desire to learn is critical for this position, as we are constantly shifting around new and different projects, where you will likely be working on something new every day. Your workload may change daily, as you may be pulling an engine from a 1960s muscle car one day, and the next day you may be asked to diagnose a fuel starvation issue in a 1920s race car. Responsibilities

  • Documentation (notes and pictures) of arriving client vehicles, highlighting the condition of the vehicle when received
  • Diagnosis of respective vehicle systems needing service (fuel, electrical, mechanical, oiling, valvetrain, cooling, etc., or all if restoration required)
  • Rebuilding engines, rebuilding manual transmissions, creating gaskets for sub-assemblies, replacing bearings, rebuilding fuel/oil pumps, etc.
  • Troubleshooting/Rebuilding: Fuel systems, oiling systems, points-style ignition systems, valvetrain issues, and cooling systems.
  • Autonomy – Being able to progressively work through a project and anticipate the next course of action without step-by-step instruction. Systematically and intentionally progressing with thoughtful anticipation of replacement parts to be ordered or reproduced.
  • Understanding the current status of the project vehicle assigned, being fully aware of what it needs in order to perform reliably and safely.
  • Cleaning and maintaining your working environment to prevent safety hazards, prevent smudges on client vehicles, and share the workspace.
  • Communicating with management in a timely manner regarding time-off, vacation days, family priorities, emergencies and clerical work.
  • Respecting coworkers within their operating space and being an overall team player within an encouraging atmosphere.

Experience & Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience as an automobile mechanic
  • At least 5 years of experience assembling conventional internal combustion engines
  • At least 5 years of experience rebuilding carburetors
  • Experience diagnosing driveability issues on vehicles with carburetors and points-style distributors
  • Ability to research service procedures, specifications, etc. from a variety of sources to ensure adequate information relating to a procedure or task.
  • Ability to utilize our library of antique automotive ‘dealership manuals’ to properly repair a vehicle
  • Experience rebuilding carburetors
  • Experience identifying non-standard problems, such as problems ensued from previous poor repairs or swapping of parts.
  • Experience in diagnosing electrical issues on 6V, 12V, and positive or negative earth systems.
  • Ability to work in situations where replacement parts are not available or are of poor quality.
  • Ability to perform light fabrication work, developing brackets, or adapting non-stock parts to a vehicle system.
  • Comfort with general fabrication tools and power equipment: Includes sanders, grinders, saws, files, drills, etc.
  • Ability to prep and paint smaller items such as brackets, suspension, or brake components.
  • Comfort with factory specified repairs or aftermarket part installations.
  • Excellent work ethic and craftsmanship paired with care and caution as to not damage any client vehicles.
  • Patience in handling vehicle components in delicate fashion, especially with rare or expensive parts adorned to the vehicle.
  • Experience in metal plating work is a plus (not required)
  • Experience with internal engine machine work is a plus (not required)
  • Experience with Paint and Bodywork is a plus (not required)
  • Experience using MIG and/or TIG welders is a plus (not required)
  • Experience in sheet-metal fabrication is a plus (not required)
  • Experience with trim and upholstery work is a plus (not required)

Our variety of parts machined/re-manufactured include, but are not limited to: cast-iron cylinder blocks, cast-aluminum crankcases, engine blocks, valve lapping, valve grinding, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, carburetors, superchargers, brake drums, brake shoes, and so on.
