Part-Time Home Health Generalist

Authorization, Scheduling, Orders, and Administrative Support

Position Summary

The Part-Time Home Health Generalist supports day-to-day administrative operations for a home health agency. This role assists with authorizations, patient scheduling, physician orders, documentation follow-up, and general office coordination. The position requires strong organization, attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Reports To: Office Manager, Administrator, Director of Nursing, or Clinical Supervisor

Key Responsibilities

Authorization Support

The Home Health Generalist will assist with obtaining, tracking, and updating authorizations for home health services. Duties may include:

  • Submitting authorization requests to insurance companies, managed care organizations, or payer portals
  • Verifying patient eligibility and benefits
  • Tracking pending, approved, denied, or expiring authorizations
  • Communicating with clinical staff regarding approved service units, visit limits, or authorization issues
  • Following up with payers, physicians, and referral sources when additional documentation is needed
  • Maintaining accurate authorization records in the agency’s EMR or tracking system

Scheduling Support

The Home Health Generalist will help coordinate patient visits and staff schedules. Duties may include:

  • Scheduling nurses, therapists, aides, and other field staff for patient visits
  • Confirming patient availability and visit times
  • Updating schedules when visits are missed, canceled, rescheduled, or reassigned
  • Communicating schedule changes to patients, caregivers, and field staff
  • Monitoring upcoming visits to ensure timely care delivery
  • Assisting with coverage needs due to call-offs, vacations, or changes in patient condition

Physician Orders and Documentation

The Home Health Generalist will assist with managing physician orders and related documentation. Duties may include:

  • Preparing, sending, tracking, and following up on physician orders
  • Calling physician offices to request signatures or missing documentation
  • Uploading signed orders into the EMR
  • Maintaining logs for outstanding orders
  • Notifying supervisors of delayed or missing orders
  • Assisting with plan of care documentation, verbal orders, and recertification paperwork as assigned

General Administrative Duties

The role may also support broader agency operations, including:

  • Answering phones and responding to patient, caregiver, staff, and provider inquiries
  • Faxing, scanning, uploading, and filing documents
  • Assisting with intake paperwork and referral documentation
  • Updating patient records and demographic information
  • Supporting compliance with agency policies, payer requirements, and documentation standards
  • Assisting with audits, quality assurance tasks, and record reviews
  • Performing other administrative duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience in home health, healthcare administration, medical office work, or insurance authorization preferred
  • Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, or private insurance authorization processes preferred
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, scanning, and electronic documentation systems
  • Ability to communicate professionally with patients, families, physicians, payers, and staff
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize competing responsibilities
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using a home health EMR system
  • Knowledge of home health terminology, physician orders, plans of care, and visit scheduling
  • Bilingual ability is a plus
  • Prior experience working with authorizations, referrals, or care coordination

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
