Horizons at Westminster School is a community-centered education program supporting elementary, middle, and high school students from Hartford. Horizons builds long-term partnerships with students, families, communities, and schools to create experiences outside of school that inspire the joy of learning. The main component of Horizons is a six-week summer program located on the campus of Westminster School, where students in Grades K-9 participate in academic, cultural, and recreational enrichment activities, including teaching all students how to swim.

The six-week program is supplemented by a growing school-year program, where students participate in mentoring, tutoring, community service, and cultural and celebratory events. Horizons at Westminster operates a proven model and is part of an affiliated network with over 70 Horizons sites serving students across the country.

About the Position

Horizons at Westminster is seeking an enthusiastic, professional self-starter to serve in the role of Horizons High School Coordinator. Working closely with the Executive Director, Program Director, and Director of Development & Community Relations of Horizons at Westminster, this role will provide coordination and support of key tasks with the goals of expanding and enhancing our high school program. The ideal candidate has experience working with high school students, familiarity with Hartford, understands the value of mentoring, and can provide opportunities for students to explore college and career options. The position will provide a broad range of responsibilities and professional development and is a great view into the needs, opportunities, and operations of a nonprofit. The High School Coordinator will report to the Executive Director of Horizons at Westminster. This is a full-time, year-round position, requiring flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends.

Key Responsibilities

School Year

  • Oversee one-on-one mentoring program.
  • Provide monthly check-ins for 30 students; document each meeting in a report.
  • Recruit professionals within the local area to serve as high school mentors, participate in the hiring process, and provide ongoing training and support throughout the mentoring process.
  • Visit all high schools that Horizons students attend, connect with each student’s advisor or relevant proxy and establish lines of communication; work with school partners so that students receive additional support when needed.
  • Facilitate connections with local organizations and companies that can provide job opportunities or internships for high school students.
  • Identify opportunities for volunteering/community service with local organizations in Hartford and provide scheduled opportunities for Horizons high school students to participate with these initiatives.
  • Coordinate with high school students to plan seasonal social gatherings.
  • Facilitate regular college visits and career exposure opportunities.
  • Schedule and attend an overnight retreat.
  • Track student participation in all programming areas and provide incentive for those who meet eligibility criteria.
  • Serve as the point person for Horizons high school families and make seasonal personalized contact with each family about their child.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Summer

9th Grade Summer (Six-Week Session).

  • Lead team-building activities for 9th grade class.
  • Support the academic and recreational activities of the 9th grade class; if possible, teach one of the classes (Financial Literacy, Digital Literacy, or Wellness).
  • Schedule and attend weekly field trips with 9th grade class.
  • Participate in middle school programming (field trips, recreational activities) to establish relationships that will transfer to high school.

10th Grade Summer (Starting in 2027).

  • Oversee one week of standardized testing “boot camp.”

11th Grade Summer (Starting in 2028).

  • Oversee one week of standardized testing “boot camp” and college application prep “boot camp.”

Support students of working age with job/internship applications and placement (including the opportunity to work at Horizons).

Complete other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with high school students in an academic or mentoring capacity.
  • Proficiency with Google suite.
  • Familiarity with high school options available to Hartford students (Hartford Promise, RSCO, independent schools, etc.).
  • Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Ideal candidate has roots in the Hartford community, including local residency or alumni status within Hartford Public Schools.
  • Current driver’s license with clean driving record required. Ability to obtain license endorsement to drive children.
  • High-level oral and written communication skills needed.
  • Demonstrated excellence in time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
