The Host position is about:

Ensuring the guest dining experience, as a whole, is enjoyable, well-timed, and pleasant.
Responsible for taking reservations, greeting and seating guests, and thanking guests as they depart.
Assign all necessary tables pre-shift and provide servers with appropriate chits.
Answer phones throughout the shift and direct calls to appropriate personnel as necessary.
Pull out chairs, seat guests, provide menus once seated.
Additional opening and closing side work-related job duties: cleaning, stocking, setting up host stand for next shift.
