Position Overview:
As the first point of contact for guests at Ava June, the Host plays a critical role in creating a welcoming and memorable dining experience. This position requires exceptional hospitality, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage guest flow efficiently. The Host works closely with the service team, kitchen, and management to ensure smooth restaurant operations, accurate wait times, and a warm, engaging atmosphere.
Reporting Relationships:
Hosts report directly to the management team and work collaboratively across all departments to provide an exceptional dining experience.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Welcome guests warmly and professionally, setting the tone for their dining experience.
- Manage reservations, walk-ins, and waitlist coordination using the restaurant’s reservation system (e.g., Tock, OpenTable, or Resy).
- Escort guests to their tables, ensuring a smooth and efficient seating process.
- Anticipate guest needs, accommodate seating preferences, and provide thoughtful solutions for special requests.
- Provide menu knowledge, answer basic guest questions, and guide guests on dining options (e.g., specials, wine pairings, private dining availability).
- Maintain an accurate seating chart and waitlist, updating staff regularly on table availability.
- Communicate with servers and management to optimize table turnover while ensuring guests do not feel rushed.
- Coordinate large parties and special seating requests to enhance guest satisfaction.
- Monitor restaurant capacity and adjust pacing to support the kitchen and service team.
- Ensure the host stand and entrance are clean, organized, and welcoming at all times.
- Answer phones professionally, handling reservation inquiries, takeout orders, and general questions.
- Assist with coat check and personal belongings storage, if applicable.
- Manage any guest concerns with professionalism and escalate issues to management when necessary.
- Communicate effectively with servers, bartenders, and kitchen staff to ensure smooth transitions between guest arrivals and service execution.
- Support servers and staff during peak hours by helping with guest seating, resetting tables, or assisting with to-go orders.
- Assist in pre-shift meetings by providing insight on reservations, special requests, or VIP guests.
- Follow all health and safety regulations, ensuring that entryways, pathways, and exits remain clear.
- Enforce restaurant policies related to guest seating, age verification (for bar seating), and dress code (if applicable).
- Support Restaurant Success Beyond Basic Service: Participate in menu knowledge sessions, team meetings, and service improvement initiatives as needed.

- Basic Knowledge of Restaurant Operations & Food/Beverage Offerings: Ability to speak confidently about the menu, specials, and wine program.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; secondary education in hospitality is a plus.
- At least 1 year of experience in a restaurant, hotel, or customer service role preferred.
- Experience with reservation systems (e.g., Tock, OpenTable, Resy) is a plus.
- Knowledge of fine dining service standards is an advantage.
Licensing & Certifications:
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and move for extended periods while serving guests.
- Must be able to carry trays, plates, and glassware safely and efficiently.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs as needed.
- Ability to navigate a multi-level workspace, including stairs, if applicable (reasonable accommodations will be made as needed).
