Housing Coordinator

Since 2004, The Gathering Inn has compassionately reached out to individuals experiencing homelessness, aiming to welcome new beginnings and transform lives. Originally a winter-only shelter serving 40 individuals nightly, we have evolved into a multifaceted organization with multiple locations, serving nearly 500 individuals and families daily. Our mission is to meet people where they are, inspire hope, and walk alongside them on their journey to sustainable housing. Through our emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, and medical respite care, we provide programs and support designed to empower guests toward self-sufficiency and long-term stability.

Position Overview

The Housing Coordinator will work directly with individuals and families experiencing homelessness to secure permanent housing solutions. This role involves identifying appropriate housing opportunities, assisting guests in navigating the housing process, and providing ongoing support to ensure successful transitions. The Housing Coordinator will collaborate with case managers, landlords, housing authorities, and other community resources to maximize housing stability for shelter residents.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uphold the Mission, Vision, and Values of The Gathering Inn and always maintain a guest-first mentality.
  • Conduct housing assessments for shelter residents to identify appropriate housing options.
  • Assist guests in finding affordable and sustainable housing solutions based on their needs and circumstances.
  • Screen potential guests experiencing homelessness for eligibility to participate in Rapid Rehousing (RRH) programs to assist with moving costs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with landlords, property managers, and housing programs to facilitate housing opportunities.
  • Coordinate and attend housing viewings with guests as needed.
  • Provide education to guests on tenant rights, housing responsibilities, and budgeting for housing costs.
  • Assist guests with the application process for housing programs, including completing rental applications, obtaining necessary documents, and advocating with landlords.
  • Collaborate with case managers to create individualized housing stability plans for guests.
  • Offer ongoing support to guests post-placement to ensure long-term housing success and address any barriers.
  • Work closely with internal staff (case managers, shelter staff, program directors) and external partners (housing authorities, nonprofits) to streamline housing services.
  • Collaborate with community agencies to connect guests with resources such as rental assistance, legal aid, and supportive services.
  • Participate in case conferences and team meetings to coordinate care and housing plans for guests.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of guest interactions, housing progress, and outcomes.
  • Ensure all guest data is entered into the shelter’s database in a timely manner and in compliance with organizational and funding requirements.
  • Stay informed about relevant funding sources, housing vouchers, and subsidy programs.
  • Apply knowledge of available resources to help guests access financial aid or housing vouchers.
  • Prepare and submit reports on housing placements, guest outcomes, and challenges encountered during the housing search process.
  • Actively recruit landlords willing to rent to shelter residents, including those with poor rental histories or low income.
  • Provide ongoing support to landlords and mediate disputes between guests and landlords as needed.
  • Advocate for guests facing discrimination or barriers in securing housing.
  • Identify gaps in housing services and propose solutions to better support guests in securing permanent housing.
  • Stay current on changes in housing laws, affordable housing developments, and best practices in homeless services.

Position Expectations

  • Be punctual and adhere to staffing schedules.
  • Complete work accurately; proofread all documents you create or distribute.
  • Maintain computer literacy for documentation and record-keeping purposes.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and a proactive approach to maintaining a neat and orderly work environment. Ability to organize workload effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Use good judgment and discretion in all aspects of this position.

  • Possess knowledge of homelessness, poverty, mental health, substance abuse, and trauma.
  • Remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Exhibit strong communication and active listening skills.

Education and/or Experience

  • B.A., B.S., and equivalent experience preferred, including at least one year of experience Case Management, Property Management, or Housing Assistance required.
  • Knowledge of social service agencies is preferred.
