HR Assistant

Refuge for Women is a non-profit, faith-based organization providing specialized care for women who have escaped human trafficking or sexual exploitation. With multiple locations across the U.S., Refuge for Women offers safe housing, at no charge to the resident, with around-the-clock care as clients progress through evidence-based, trauma-informed programming. The compassionate staff is trained to help residents work through the program to reclaim their identities and reach their goals to overcome addictions, heal from trauma and develop life skills leading to healthy, balanced living and financial independence. Position Overview:

The HR Assistant supports the Human Resources function of Refuge for Women’s Central Services Team. This role helps ensure that HR practices reflect the organization’s mission to provide safe, restorative, and faith-based residential care. The HR Assistant serves staff with professionalism, compassion, and discretion, recognizing the unique dynamics of a trauma-informed care environment and the work our direct care employees do.


Your team contribution:

You will assist the Central Team with the support of our location staff. This position serves as a resource to supervisors and employees - answering their questions, providing support and making sure the organization maintains a high level of accountability for the services it provides.

Administrative & HR Support

  • Maintain accurate, secure, and confidential employee records in the HRIS system, recognizing the sensitivity of both staff and program environments
  • Prepare HR documentation including offer letters, background check authorizations, and policy acknowledgments
  • Work in coordination with the VP of Administration to schedule interviews
  • Serve as a first point of contact for HR-related questions, responding with professionalism and care
  • Direct employee concerns to appropriate HR leadership with discretion

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Post open positions and assist hiring managers in correspondence with applicants
  • Assist VP of Administration and hiring managers in screening candidates for qualifications, cultural fit, and alignment with the organization’s mission and statement of faith
  • Coordinate interviews with hiring managers and program leadership
  • Support onboarding for new hires, including paperwork, training schedules, and introduction to trauma-informed practices
  • Help ensure all required pre-employment screenings (background checks, references, etc.) are completed

Training & Compliance

  • Help ensure compliance with employment laws, licensing standards, and nonprofit regulations related to residential care programs
  • Assist with maintaining HRIS personnel files required for audits, accreditation, or inspections
  • Track and document required staff trainings (e.g., trauma-informed care, safety protocols, etc)
  • Support updates to policies and procedures

Payroll & Benefits Support

  • Assist with payroll data collection and verification, including tracking time for staff
  • Maintain employee benefits records and assist with enrollment processes
  • Respond to basic payroll and benefits questions or direct to appropriate contacts


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred
  • 1–2 years of administrative or HR experience preferred
  • Experience in a nonprofit, residential program, or human services setting is a plus

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • High level of integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to navigate sensitive situations with professionalism and compassion
  • Proficiency in Google Workplace and HRIS preferred

Faith & Cultural Alignment

  • Demonstrated commitment to the organization’s Christian mission and values
  • Willingness to support and participate in faith-based activities as part of staff culture
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn trauma-informed care principles
