The Opportunity

We're seeking a strategic HR Director to lead our human resources function during an exciting period of organizational growth and transformation. This role goes beyond traditional HR administration—you'll serve as a true strategic partner to our CEO and leadership team, shaping the employee experience and building HR infrastructure that supports our mission.

You'll inherit a strong foundation, including documented processes, an HR operations manual, a newly designed performance management system, and a Paychex automation roadmap. You'll also have access to strategic consulting support as you transition into the role.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary HR leader, providing guidance to leadership and staff on all people-related matters
  • Own and optimize our Paychex HRIS, leveraging automation to drive efficiency
  • Lead full-cycle recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes
  • Administer compensation and benefits programs aligned with our compensation philosophy
  • Facilitate performance management conversations and coach managers on feedback and goal-setting
  • Lead staff training initiatives, including new hire training, annual compliance training, and ongoing development for managers and frontline staff
  • Support culture-building and employee engagement efforts to strengthen retention and alignment with organizational values
  • Partner with Safety leadership to ensure all HR-related child safety requirements are met, including background checks and documentation audits
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
  • Partner with leadership to develop and implement HR strategies that support organizational goals
  • Maintain and evolve HR policies, procedures, and documentation
  • Support employee relations, including addressing concerns and facilitating resolution

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2 years in an HR leadership or generalist role
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification preferred
  • Experience with HRIS platforms (Paychex experience a plus)
  • Strong knowledge of employment law and HR compliance
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution
  • Passion for mission-driven work and serving the community

Ideal Candidate Profile

Experience & Background

  • 5–7 years of progressive HR experience, ideally with time spent as a sole HR practitioner or in a small HR team where they owned multiple functions
  • Nonprofit, education, or youth services experience is a strong plus—these candidates will understand the nuances of mission-driven work, grant-funded positions, and the compliance requirements that come with serving minors
  • Background in organizations of similar size (50–150 employees) with a mix of full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff

Key Competencies to Prioritize

  • Self-direction and resourcefulness: They'll need to figure things out independently and won't have a large team to lean on
  • HRIS proficiency: Someone who sees technology as a tool to create efficiency, not just a system to maintain—Paychex experience is ideal, but any candidate who has led an HRIS optimization or implementation will adapt quickly
  • Compliance orientation: Youth-serving organizations carry additional requirements around background checks, child safety policies, and employment eligibility—experience navigating these is valuable
  • Employee relations strength: In a department of one, this person will be the go-to for managers and staff on sensitive issues and needs to handle them with discretion and confidence
  • Strategic mindset with tactical comfort: They should be able to contribute to leadership discussions about workforce planning and culture while also processing payroll changes and updating the handbook

Salary $80,000

Hours:

  • This is a full-time, exempt salaried position, M-F. Average 40 hours per week
