Position Summary
The Human Resources Manager is a hands-on leader responsible for all aspects of HR in support of a dynamic, high-end custom architectural millwork operation. This role partners closely with leadership to attract, develop, and retain top talent while fostering a culture of craftsmanship, collaboration, accountability, and respect.
The HR Manager oversees recruiting, employee relations, payroll administration, compliance, benefits, performance management, and HR strategies aligned with operational and business goals. The ideal candidate is highly visible in both the office and production environments, builds trust with employees at all levels, and helps drive a safe, productive, and engaged workplace.
Key Responsibilities
HR Administration & Operations
- Oversee payroll processing and onboarding administration
- Maintain accurate employee records and HR systems
- Prepare HR reports and metrics to support decision-making
- Continuously improve HR processes and systems to support operational efficiency
Recruitment & Staffing
- Manage the full-cycle recruitment process, including sourcing, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding
- Partner with department managers to understand staffing needs
- Develop effective recruiting strategies for hard-to-fill production roles
- Support onboarding and integration of new employees into the company culture
Employee Relations & Engagement
- Serve as a trusted resource for employee concerns, conflict resolution, and workplace issues
- Promote a culture of accountability, respect, teamwork, and communication
- Conduct investigations and recommend appropriate corrective actions when needed
- Maintain a strong, visible presence on the production floor and in the office to build relationships and stay connected to day-to-day operations
Performance Management
- Oversee performance review processes and employee development plans
- Coach managers on employee feedback, performance improvement, disciplinary actions, and improvement strategies
- Support succession planning and employee retention efforts
Policy Development & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and maintain the employee handbook, HR policies, and procedures
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, as well as company policies
- Stay current on employment law updates and proactively advise leadership on HR-related risks and best practices
- Maintain compliance with wage and hour, leave administration, and workplace regulations
Compensation & Benefits
- Administer employee benefits programs and support employee questions and enrollment
- Support compensation planning, pay equity initiatives, and salary benchmarking
- Manage annual open enrollment and benefit communications
Training & Development
- Identify training needs and coordinate employee development programs
- Support leadership development and employee growth initiatives
- Assist with safety training coordination in partnership with operations
Risk Management
- Coordinate and document safety meetings
- Manage workers’ compensation claims and return-to-work processes
- Partner with operations and the Safety Committee on OSHA compliance and workplace safety initiatives
- Support a culture focused on safe work practices and continuous improvement
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred
- 10+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Experience in woodworking, manufacturing, or construction environments preferred
- Strong knowledge of employment laws, HR best practices, and payroll administration
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage confidential information with professionalism and discretion
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HR/payroll systems
- Ability to build strong relationships across all levels of the organization
Preferred Qualifications
- HR certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR)
- Experience processing a weekly union and non-union payroll
- Experience in a small to mid-sized, family-owned business
- Familiarity with custom architectural millwork, woodworking, or construction environments
Work Environment
- Combination of office and active manufacturing/shop environment
- Regular interaction with office and production employees
- Reports directly to Senior Management
- Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on manufacturing setting
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $100,000 – $120,000, based on experience and qualifications
