Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is the USA's oldest conservation, education, and recreation organization. Our mission is simple yet powerful: protect, enjoy, and wisely use the breathtaking mountains, rivers, and trails of the Appalachian region. We inspire joy and epic outdoor experiences while making a positive impact on the environment. AMC is an inclusive community that welcomes everyone to get involved. As an employee, you’ll have access to exciting programs, policies, and procedures that empower you to make a real difference. If you’re ready to be a force for good, join the AMC now and become part of our collaborative team.

The Huts Assistant Manager for Staffing (HAM-S) is a unique job opportunity to ensure a strong field presence for backcountry staff in the huts and provide invaluable front-country support in planning and preparing for high-quality guest experience to all that pass the AMC Huts. In collaboration with the Huts Management team, this position participates in all aspects of the staffing of the huts from hiring, training, management and evaluation of the 112+ seasonal staff hired annually.
What You’ll Be Doing at AMC
  • Serve as a primary link between front country operations and the eight backcountry huts’ staff via regular field visits, including overnights, to maintain a strong supervisory relationship with all staff and ensure high quality hut experience for guests. (2 overnight visits weekly to huts during full-service, 1 overnight visit biweekly during self-service.)
  • Serve as a Search and Rescue Team Leader for a 24 -hour period in rotation with 3-4 other AMC SAR Team Leaders. This team is a dispatch/point-of-contact for both AMC and NH Fish & Game for any SARs that might arise during their on-call shift. Must commit to being in radio and cell range for the duration of an on-call period.
  • Be the primary Huts recruiter, payroll supervisor, and point of contact for all seasonal staff throughout the hiring process. HAM-S will screen applicants, recruit returning staff, post job descriptions, schedule interviews, guide seasonal staff through onboarding, and maintain records of the process to aid in the Huts Management team hiring decisions.
  • Implement and maintain seasonal staff evaluation and feedback reporting to improve workplace dynamics and highlight talented seasonal staff for returner recruitment.
  • Ensure the timely submission of seasonal staff timecards, reported tips, and other payroll tasks.
  • Track annual data on staff/hut performance and guest feedback via comment cards, SurveyMonkey, and other data sources.
  • Working closely with Huts Manager and Huts Assistant Manager for Logistics, ensure solid support of field staff throughout the year, collaborate on evolving SOPs and trainings (cookbook, guest service, transitional cleanings, permit obligations, etc.) and as a department provide logistical support to AMC’s SAR coordinator and the White Mountain SAR working group.
  • Obtain and maintain a ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification—all huts Food Licenses are dependent on Huts Management Team having this certification so that ServSafe Manager is always on-duty across the 8 facilities.
  • Manage daily hut operations including scheduling employees, triaging staffing crises, updating written resources (cookbooks, operations manuals, etc.), and filling in on an as-needed basis.
  • Coordinate with the Huts Management to develop and deploy multi-day, field-based staff trainings at the start of the various staffing cycles, as well as weekly updates to all staff.
  • Ensure smooth transitions between full-service and self-service and facilitate proper closing and opening procedures at start and end of seasons.
  • Engage in long-range planning with Huts Management and the Northern Lodging & Hospitality Team to implement policies and practices in the Huts that exemplify AMC’s values and goals.
  • Alongside the Huts Management team, HAM-S will cooperate and collaborate with the AMC’s Research and Interpretive Departments to maximize the environmental education/climate research opportunities at each hut.
What AMC is Looking For
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and an attention to detail
  • Strong computer literacy, with emphasis on Microsoft 365
  • 3-5 years' experience in guest service and/or food service
  • Applicant holds a valid drivers’ license or ability to obtain one
  • Ability to hike 3-10 miles over rugged, steep terrain to access backcountry facilities
