Careerline Tech Center is seeking a visionary and highly skilled Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Instructor to lead the design, launch, and instruction of our brand-new HVAC program. This is a unique opportunity for an industry professional to transition from the field into a leadership role, shaping the next generation of HVAC technicians from the ground up. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about the trades and eager to build a premier career and technical education (CTE) program.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee Curriculum: Develop and maintain a CTE curriculum aligned to Michigan’s HVAC competencies and industry expectations.
  • Deliver engaging and rigorous instruction which utilizes both the classroom and the mechanical lab to support hands-on learning.
  • Incorporate Technology and Tools: Utilize and embed industry-specific equipment, simulation tools, and digital technologies into daily instruction to reflect current practice standards.
  • Support Work-Based Learning: Collaborate with local mechanical contractors, unions, and facility management companies to arrange internships, job shadowing, and apprenticeships. Maintain an active Program Advisory Committee to ensure program relevancy.
  • Create and Nurture Partnerships: Work collaboratively with staff, industry partners, and post-secondary institutions to provide students with opportunities for career and college advancement.
  • Support Student Credential Attainment: Directly facilitate and supervise student testing for industry recognized certifications and other relevant credentials.
  • Develop Students: Guide students in developing professional skills, including communication, ethical practices, and teamwork. Assist with post-secondary planning and transition.
  • Keep Accurate Records: Maintain accurate student records of student performance, program compliance and credential attainment. Ensure all student records comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Oversee Budget and Equipment: Maintain a program budget. Order, maintain and manage all necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Assure Safety and Compliance: Maintain a safe and professional shop environment. Ensure all high-voltage equipment, gas-fired appliances, and pressurized cylinders are stored and operated according to OSHA and MIOSHA standards. Implement and enforce strict Lockout/Tagout procedures.
  • Engage in Professional Development: Participate in continuous professional growth to maintain instructional permits and HVAC certifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a CTE endorsement in 47.0201 Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Refrigeration OR
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a CTE endorsement in one of the following: 17.0101 Cooling, 17.0202 Gas Appliance, 17.0102 Heating, 17.3000 Refrigeration, or 17.0103 Ventilating OR
  • 4,000 hours of recent and relevant HVAC industry experience within the past 6 years, which can be documented and verified.
  • Experience working with high school students in classroom and lab settings is preferred.

Certifications and Qualifications

  • Possess a current and valid EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Minimum of three years of recent, relevant work experience in the HVAC field required.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, and safely handling tools, equipment, and machinery in a shop environment.
  • Must possess the fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination necessary to operate specialized HVAC hand tools, power tools, and delicate testing equipment.
  • Requires the visual acuity to read small gauges and color-coded wiring, the auditory ability to diagnose mechanical sounds or vibrations, and the olfactory sense to detect gas leaks or electrical scorching.

Compensation and Employment Details

  • Pay Range: Starting Per CTCTA Master Agreement
  • Schedule: Full-time, Full Year Balanced Calendar, 190 days per year
  • Employee Group: Union Salary
  • Benefits: Full benefits package, including health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance. MPSERS provided retirement plan.
