ICU Nurse – Job DescriptionPosition Overview
An ICU (Intensive Care Unit) Nurse provides specialized, high-level nursing care to critically ill or unstable patients. This role includes continuous monitoring, advanced clinical interventions, emergency response, and collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities1. Critical Patient Care
- Monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, ventilators, infusion pumps, and patient responses
- Administer medications, IV infusions, blood products, and emergency drugs
- Provide advanced life-support interventions (airway management, suctioning, CPR support)
- Manage patients on ventilators, dialysis, and other life-support systems
2. Assessment & Documentation
- Perform detailed and frequent patient assessments
- Identify and report changes in patient condition immediately
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all care provided
3. Emergency Management
- Respond quickly to medical emergencies including code blue situations
- Assist physicians during procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, and chest tube placement
- Follow ICU protocols for sepsis, cardiac arrest, trauma, and shock management
4. Equipment Handling
- Operate and troubleshoot ICU equipment (monitors, ventilators, defibrillators, pumps)
- Ensure all equipment is functioning safely and report malfunctions promptly
5. Infection Control & Safety
- Maintain strict aseptic techniques and infection-prevention measures
- Follow all ICU standards, hospital policies, and safety procedures
- Ensure proper handling of biomedical waste and patient isolation protocols
6. Family Support & Communication
- Educate and update families regarding patient condition and care plans
- Provide emotional support to families during critical situations
- Promote compassionate, patient- and family-centered care
7. Coordination & Teamwork
- Collaborate with intensivists, physicians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, care planning, and quality improvement activities
- Support training and mentoring of new nurses or students
QualificationsEducation
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (GNM/B.Sc. Nursing)
- Valid nursing license/registration
- Specialized ICU or critical care certification (preferred)
Experience
- 1–3 years of ICU, emergency, or critical care experience preferred
- New graduates with ICU training may be considered depending on facility
Skills
- Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills
- Knowledge of ICU protocols, emergency procedures, and advanced patient monitoring
- Ability to work in high-pressure, fast-paced environments
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and decision-making abilities
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹25,000.00 per month
